I'm sure they would be happy to if you paid them enough money.

It will cost a fair chunk though. They just replaced my mirrors (like for like under warranty) and it was 3 hours labour each side, as they have to remove all the door panels to get access to the mirrors.

Just saw new mirrors on a 2009 model leaving the dealer yesterday. The purchaser and I both agreed that the old mirror follows the shape of the EOS better than the new mirror. The new mirror is bulky and its lines are not in keeping with the rest of the car. We both concluded that VW had to update something on the 2009 to justify a price increase.

Lapaka, My experience is that although they may not fit the trim line as well, the viewing (function) is better. I would not want to go back. We had wide view stick on mirrors on the 08. Now we do not need them. Still a very small blind spot, but much improved. Just have to turn the head, not lean way over to see if anyone is over there :)

Good point Todd. I'm glad to see they make a functional difference. They look great on the new Passat CC. Wish I could have both.

Whilst the change in design of the 2009 model's mirrors may or may not be to everyones' taste, it's a pity that VW didn't invest the cost of the design change in producing correct mirrors for those of us that drive on the other side of the road! Proper stalks would be a bonus too. I wonder why Australia bothers with it's own Design Rules [ADRs] sometimes. Still, none of the competition bother changing the mirrors either!

Face lift model

I am curious as to what the design differance is for Australia mirrors. I have an outside mirror on the left and the right. The mirror on the right (passinger side) magnifies (objects in mirror appear closer than they are). I set the inside mirror to see what is directly behind me. The left mirror is set to bring into view what is in my inside mirror as it passes on the left. The right mirror is set to bring into view vehicles as they pass on the right. A quick glance to the right or the left confirms weather it is safe to change lanes. I have often been in cars where the driver sets all mirrors to see the same thing, what is directly behind them, eliminating the need for outside mirrors.

I hope this message is not too confusing.

My partner's MY09 RHD version is a "mirror image" of your LHD description.

This car was delivered properly set up for Australian roads - when the mirrors are set correctly you can see vehicles [especially bikes] on either side when their front is level with your shoulders so you know when it is safe to change lanes.

I find it difficult and extremely unsafe to drive vehicles with no external mirrors or a driver's side external mirror only on multi-lane roads.

Not confusing at all Steve. Most manufacturers, except the Japanese who of course drive on the same side as us anyway and wouldn't get away with it in their home market, put the steering wheel on the other [right hand] side of the car, but change nothing else. This puts many items at an ergonomic disadvantage. Some examples:- Hand brake position, Steering wheel stalks, Footwell room with deletion of left foot rest, radio switches, mirrors set up for LHD etc. Ever seen a Mini wagons' doors? Most of these things are just irritants that familiarity deals with like remembering which side the fuel filler is on, but not changing the mirrors round should be a legislation issue, try getting away with that in the good old USA! The lawyers would have a field day. "I just didn't see him coming because they put in the wrong mirrors your worship!!" How would you like your mirror on the left to be the magnifier, and the right one not to? That [in the reverse sense] is what the RHD [1/3rd of us] world lives with. As I say, VW is by no means the only culprit in this penny pinching, but I am surprised that no-one has made enough of an issue of it to change things. I hope this explains it OK. I am hoping my 2009 model will be correctly set up when it arrives, as SS has just kindly stated. According to Wheels magazine they weren't when they tested the EOS.

I'm totally confused about all this mirror stuff. Left side, right side, fold 'em. I think I'm going to put some Ford F-150 mirrors on my rig as backup gazers.

Anyone think the truck mirrors will destroy the look of my Eos?

You shouldn't have to worry about viewing  Can't remember do they have the extend option? If so, wow what a look :D On my Chevy 2500 Diesel I put extenders on, I call them the dumbo ears. Now that is ugly, but when towing the trailer, I do not care.

Having been a motorcycle rider in my youth a look over the shoulder as the last thing you do before a manoeuvre was called the life saver and in my opinion the same principle should apply to car drivers.

As for 30% of us running RHD cars I think you will find it’s actually closer to 50% as you need to include China and India in the tally. Let us not forget though that travelling on the right hand side of the road was a practice brought in by Napoleon. Normally, knights dismounted to the left and passed each other to the left because of their sword arm (which was their right arm). Napoleon, having lost an arm, changed the way the French did things because of his ego.

1) China drives on the RIGHT (apart from Hong Kong, for historical reasons)! There are plenty who drive on the left, but the main ones are of course the UK, Ireland, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, India, Pakistan and South Africa. Then there are lots of small islands and states like Singapore.

2) Napoleon lost an arm? No - it was because he was left-handed that he insisted on marching on the right, then he could have his sword in his left hand! But the reality is he did it just to be different from everyone else! And the idea seems to have caught on!
