Have a 1999 V plate 1600 golf with air con with the AKL engine in it, Think it needs regassing as the compressor pulley is not clicking in. The larger fan on the radiator was jamed but I have replaced it with a known working one, When does this work as if I put the blower fan on & the air con it still dont turn. Is this all to do with the need for regassing?

This is not a job for the D I Y PERSON, a car dealers was fine £10,000 and the tech was fine £2,500 as non of them had had the correct training for the save handling for refrigerant gases. Topping up the system if you now the system has a leak could get the person who does it in big big pooooowwww.With the aircon on cars 9 times ouy of 10 it is a seal on a pipe that has gone by hardening by not being run over the winter and so just like the roof seals on the Eos the system should be run every 14 days to get the lub oil around the system for 15 mins min and the system must get to working temp. I'm not a car dealer I am a Air Conditioning engineer who has bin told that all sales of refrigerant gases must be accounted for. The motor industry is next on the hit list. so please be carefull was advice people give out. my advice is check that the person how does the work has a save handling cert and nows what they are doing Please:eek:

Thanks for that Redimps, I am going to get it regassed at a dealer but thought I would change the non working stuck fan first. When does this fan run? Not had any experience with air con but before I get the system regassed I want to be sure that everything else is working as it should.

It is only for static and low speed use if the car is doing above 20 mph and air is cooling the condenser coil the fan is temp/pressure attivated so as the temp in the coil goes up due to no air flowing over the coil/rad the fan starts at a set temp so cooling the high pressure(hp) gas down to hp fluid if you got a low gas pressure due to leakage this will not get hot to start the fan, and if the compresser is not starting this my be a low pressure protection switch. the hole system has on average only about 400 to 750gm in system.

I used to have a 95 Cabrio that finally got too unreliable at about the 12 year old and 170,000 miles driven point - so I upgraded to the Eos.

One thing that caused me a lot of problems was unreliable connections in the fuse box as the car got to the 7 or 8 years old point. You might check this out - move the fuse around with a finger and see if you hear your compressor click. If this is your problem you can slightly bend the tabs on the fuse a little bit and that will usually fix it.

Good luck.
