I am collecting an Icelandic Grey Eos TDI 2.0 Diesel Turbo with DSG (auto transmission) tomorrow Sun 30 Mar 08; and should get a lot of Vitamin D.

To me, the Eos represents unrivalled value for a hard top convertible and coupe with a sunroof. I think its other good points include:

Quality interior (material and fit); Exceeds Astra Twintop by far; Stops short of BMW & Mercedes-Benz;
DSG - Slick 6 speed auto transmission; Beats the new Mercedes C Class entry level models of 5 speed autos;
Relatively quiet and frugal diesel engine; Much quieter than a Merc C220 CDI;
Pretty looking front; Not as good looking as a BMW 3 series convertible, but is half its price (Australian pricing is awkward when compared to the US and the UK).

Its bad points include:

Not great looking backside and side profile
Front wheel drive

What do other Eos owners who have had the car for some time think?

It is hard to compare the Australian pricing to the UK / US as we get the up spec model as standard in Australia. Ideally I would prefer a rear wheel drive car but it appears that only BMW, Mercedes Benz and Porsche make rear wheel drive convertibles which are in a different price range. The Mazda MX5 is RWD but we didn't like the poor NVH of the MX5 and the luggage carrying capacity of the Eos is far better. I took an MX5 owner for a drive in my Eos and he said "so smooth and quiet"! I have found that the Eos is a fantastic open road cruiser. Nothing better than cruising down the Hume Highway with the roof down. Oh Yeah!

I agree with dannydutton, RWD would be nice except for the price. The Eos is very good for a FWD, it does not suffer from torque steer.
Bad points -
Nowhere to fit a frig.
No clothes hanger point (when roof is up).

Billiant brakes in an emergency. The ABS and stability programme is fantastic. Its just prevented me rfom having an accident. from 50mph to 0mph in about 20 metres. I normally think of them as not as good as other cars i've had but when it counts they are great!

1, should have waited for the DSG (so not technically a fault)
2, wind noise around top of windscreen with roof up( not a whistle/ leak but just noisy, suppose due to lack of insulation and sunroof)
3, lack of grip when pulling off.
4, poor standard spec( no cruise, steering wheel controls, auto light/wipers. all standard on lesser vw models)

personally i love the look of the car from all angles especially with the roof up

All standard on Oz models.
For the positioning in the Oz market, leather should have been standard not an expensive extra.

The Eos I found is very quiet, no wind noise and very smooth. Brilliant at 110 KHr on the open road. The only feature I would like added is a spot to put a Sunblock Cream / Solution dispenser. Although my wife made me go out and get a hat (made from Kangaroo Leather) to be used in conjunction with Sunblock.

Stephb,
Compared to other euro diesels. VW is not quite there for noise attenuation. Even my D3 is quieter, but this is only a problem when starting. Once on the road the diesel is not intrusive.
I love the low diesel consumption figures even around the city I get less than 8 l/100kms.

I am happy with the Eos, however the price in the UK I think is a little on the steep side. After all its just a VW, and granted it is a better car than the Twintop it certainly is not £10 grands worth more that a Twintop!!

Having said that I like the fact that it does and doesn't stand out from the crowd if you see what I mean. Its not flash, but its not run of the mill. When you see someone in a an Eos, they could have paid cash for it, or they might be paying through the nose for it on HP because they really want one. You could respectfully pull up in it outside a really posh hotel just after the Bently pulls away. You can take it to a wedding or a funeral and its not too "look at me".

These are the main reasons I like the car.

The only thing I didn't like when I ordered it is that if I paid the high price for electric seats, they wouldnt have come with memory positions for different drivers. ON a car that cost just under £30 grand thats just nuts!! Even my old Renault has this!

There was a big fuss about UK car prices some time ago now, but there's still a large anomaly. I guess like most UK buyers, I'm just resigned to it.

I do like the understated styling. My previous sports car was a bright blue RX-8 which did rather shout at you.

pacemaker1000 noted lack of grip when pulling off and I've noticed this. If I'm trying to quickly pull out of a junction, it seems all too easy to spin the wheels.

Hi
My 2008 2.0 TDI EOS bought in August 2007 now has 6600 kms (slightly over 4000 miles)... Which will increase big times in coming months as I'll drive her to Northern Italy and then South Spain...

Top of mind thoughts...

The pros:
- stylish, both roof up and roof down, and from front, rear and side view
- very good quality of finish (except for those wind and rattle noises sometimes)
- good value for money vs. many other cars
- the DSG
- the reasonable dynamics (and noise for a Diesel) of the engine
- the confortable seating of 4 people
- the brakes and ABS are efficient
- very reasonable oil consumption for a VW
- the speed at which windows go down
- the feeling of driving a car, and not a pot of yoghurt or a truck ;-)
- my VW dealer and salesrep

The cons:
- no electric seat position memory
- no display of song titles from CD or USB
- not always good grip in steep wet curves (My Dunlops might be the cause)
-

Happy driving!

Good and Bad points of the Eos (2)

Hello everyone,

Since I collected my Icelandic Grey Eos TDI 2.0 Diesel Turbo with DSG (auto transmission) on Sun 30 Mar 08, I have driven it for 6 days and almost got fried by the Sydney autumn sun!

I am happy to report that the Eos is better than I expected.

The Sport gearing (as opposed to"D") is simply brilliant. It is enjoyable to drive the Eos even in town.

Flaterring comments received from friends include:

Sexy;
Great colour; and
Cool.

On the other hand, not so great comments include:

Noisy engine (when compared to petrol engine cars);
Move your seat more to the front please, my legs cannot go in; and
Too much wind in my face and hair.

Thank you for the 18 replies to this thread so far, (since I started it about a week ago). I enjoy reading others' opinions about the Eos.

Special thanks to the Administrator Andrew for such an impressive website. I like to meet you one day....:)
