Has anyone else played with this yet ?

I've been 'driving' around my old stomping ground. This is some impresive technology....

I can't stop playing with this. Nearly all of the US is covered and the majority of AUS and NZ. It looks like only the major cities in the UK are done so far but that was the same as the satalite view before they did the whole country.

AUS is great as you can just drive down these long long dusty roads. Its like being on holiday without leaving the house.

Oh I didn't know Oz was done - I shall check that out after I close this down and look at my old home, thanks.

The mapping in parts of Victoria seems to be about 3 years old. There is a Van parked in our car park at work that we traded in in June 1996, and a sign at Sausage Gully on the Great Ocean Road that someone nicked about 18 months ago. Also, the house next door, that people moved into in January, is a vacant block.

Having said that, we drove behind a Mini Bus type vehicle, on the Great Ocean Road, 18 months ago, near Lavers Hill, that I am guessing was taking pictures for Google Earth and Mapping.

It had booms like extended side mirror sticking out sideways and some sort of scaffolding arrangement sticking out the front, which had a black box arrangement attached.

Unfortunately, I have no reference point in time, to look at images on this part of the road, and know if they were taken then.

Hi Geoffa1.
Apparently, this is the vehicle that was spotted in Melbourne taking the images. The same one was seen in Whyalla.
There are a number of sites set up to show some of the more "interesting" mages captured around the world (eg streetviewfun.com and googlevan.com). Strange what some people find interesting!

No, the vehicle we saw was about the size of a LWB high roof Transit and had outdiggers to the sides and front.

The one in your picture has a red light on top, and may be an escort for the photo van, or maybe they can get by with smaller vehicles in more urban areas, or maybe the van I saw had nothing to do with Google Street View

- it could have been the "cat detector van" (apologies to Monty Python fans).

Lucari, thank you so much I have just viewed the house I lived in when I was in Melbourne - feel quite emotional! Now going to check for the apartment I had in Sydney !

Unfortunately Google took the picture of our house a while ago, so Street Maps missed our Eos by two years. However, you can see the empty spot in our garage (next to the CRX), where our shiny new Eos currently resides. My wife must have been out in her old Sebring the afternoon the Google van hit our street.
