Just purchased a 2009 Lux. Two quick questions I'm sure have been asked and answered many times:
1. How does one get music onto the HDD using a thumb drive or other USB device? Or is the SD slot the only way...
2. Is the iPhone 3g able to interface and be played through the stock system?

I thought I knew the answers but can't make it work at ALL and my dealer is ZERO help here in the states...

Thanks in advance....

1. My understanding is that you can copy music to the internal hard drive only via (a) the SD slot or (b) the CD/DVD slot. I have tried both a 2GB SD card and a CD of MP3s. Both worked. I'm guessing a DVD of MP3s would also work, but I have yet to test it. (BTW, I tried a rare 4GB SD card, NOT SDHC, and it didn't work in the SD slot.)

2. I don't own an iPhone, but I think there are several ways to play music. (a) Route the output of the iPhone headphone port to the input of the Aux-Input port under the armrest; (b) If you have the iPod cable (which may not be compatible with the Navigation system), connect it to the iPhone's iPod connector; (c) If you have the factory-installed bluetooth option, enable Bluetooth audio and stream music from iPhone via A2DP (which requires iPhone OS 3.0).

I have used 4Gb and 8Gb SDHC cards successfully in the RCD510 - the cards must be in the FAT32 format as the original FAT format is not suitable for drives over 2Gb in size. Windows NTFS format will not work on SD cards of any size or type.

I have tried 8GB SDHC cards (FAT32 formatted) in the RNS510 without success.

The user manual says the following.
The unit can read SD (Secure Digital) memory cards and MMC (Multimedia cards) memory cards with a capacity up to 2GB. The unit does support other memory cards that are the same size such as SDHC (Secure Digital High-Capacity) memory cards.
To me this is a strange statement because I don't know of any SDHC memory cards with a 2GB (or less) capacity. Just for fun I repartitioned my 8GB SDHC card to have a single 1GB partition, thinking it was a size limitation. But the unit still didn't recognize the card.

On a positive note, I burned a DVD+RW (rewritable) disc with a bunch of MP3s and it was recognized by the unit. So this might be a good way to copy a large number of MP3s to the internal hard drive since a single layer DVD can hold 4.7GB. (Of course, DVD-/+R discs are only about $0.20 each in bulk, whereas DVD+RWs are about $0.70 each.) The manual also states that dual layer DVDs (8.5GB) are supported but I haven't tried one.

Thanks

I'll definitely explore these well thought out options. One thing; I understand the HDD is supposed to be 30 GB. When I "look" at it (and keep in mind there is NOTHING on it currently) it shows that only 18.92 GB are free....any thoughts?

The internal hard drive is 30GB (unformatted). However it is divided into two partitions, one 10GB partition for copying the navigational DVD data, and one 20GB partition for music. When the music partition is formatted, you end up with 18.92GB free.

When I first inserted the nav DVD, it started copying data to the nav partition on the HDD automatically. It took a couple of hours. After that, I ejected the nav DVD and the nav unit now uses the data from the HDD.
