Hi all,

I am seriously considering an Eos I have found. Its from a VW dealer - Silver Registered July 2006, 2.0 tfsi, 17" westwoods, black leather, manual, multifunction sterring wheel, 36k on the clock and one owner for 13,995.

I am a little concerned as I hear on the forum and some other sites that in the cars 1st year it suffered from leaks and other issues.
Are there any checks/tests I can do. What should I be looking out for?

I am going to take a look at it tomrrow and if all is well, put a deposit down.

There is also one (also VW dealer) that is April 2007 2.0 tfsi, Silver cloth interior, 17" alloys, DSG, auto, 11k on the clock, £13,998

Which one would you guys sway towards?

Cheers

Gotta have leather on a car like the EOS, imo.

Some cars leak, most don't, regardless of the year. If the car has 1 previous owner I expect you'll be fine - if it was a leaky one I expect it would have been sorted under warranty already.

Just do it - you will NOT be disappointed.

Hi

You will see from my signature at the bottom that I have one very similar to the one you're looking at buying, but with red instead of black leather.

I agree that the leather option is crucial for what is (almost) the top of the range model.

My car was one of the first Customer cars registered (I got it on launch day, 14th July 2006) and if it eases your mind I have had NO leaks!

All 4 Westwoods had to be replaced under warranty last year due to corrosion from within and I would have thought they'd have sorted the issue out by now as it's happened to others too; but I'm surprised that my new Westwoods are starting to corrode as well!

All in all I'm delighted with the car and really can't think of anything I'd rather have (that I could afford anyway!). Personally I would always choose the manual over any sort of full or semi auto, but that is just a matter of choice.

Thanks for ur replys! I agree about the leather. It would be nice if it has the upgraded stereo on it though, what is the sound quality like as standard?

I test drove a tdi which was was ok, but it felt a little short of power as I am used to my Octavia vrs tdi which has 170bhp. But hey it certainly dont look as nice and you cant beat the roof down action!

I do approx 2000 miles a month so the diesel isnt ruled out completely for me. I could always get a remap to bring it up to 170bhp maybe??

I have just seen a tdi come onto the vw site for 13.5k on 56 plate with 40k on the clock, but no leather and only option is multifunction steering wheel and 17"s. If they can knock 500 quid off then I think I might be swayed. What are your thoughts? :D

I just enquired about the Tdi but its haD 3 owners...the last 2 owners were at the same address however. I suppose I would have to trust the dealer checks it over throroughly?!

Must say I'm a bit surprised that someone who was looking at a 2.0 Turbo petrol is now looking at a diesel!
It's a bit like going out for some cheese and coming home with chalk instead...

I think I have the standard sound (which on the Sport is a slight upgrade from the lowest spec) and find it absolutely fine. Frankly I think hi-fi in cars is a bit of a waste as you're in a moving tin-box anyway so the fine points of hi-fi are most probably lost in the general engine/road/wind noise.. Hence I've never ever gone for anything fancy and have always been happy (and I'm a music lover!)

My thoughts is that you should get one regardless of spec! :D ;)

Loving your chalk and cheese analogy. Haha! ;) I see what you mean though. It's just I do 2k miles a month and the tdi would save me approx £50 a month based on the mpg figures I have seen.

Regardless! I am going to look at the 2.0tfsi with leather tomorrow my heart is taking me in that direction and it's only had one owner.. I think I will leave the Tdi in Medway, 3 owners on a 3 year old car just makes me worried.

I'm sure once I feel that turbo and the heated leather my mind will me made up. It's at a vw garage in Nottingham if anyone knows it.

I know that the registration document is the only bench mark we mortals have towards the number of owners, but the registration document lists registered "keepers" do not get this confused with "owners". I cannot remember how many days it actually is, but if a "keeper" of a vehicle has it for more than "X" number of days it is my understanding that "legally" the vehicle is supposed to be registered at their name and address.

A number of years ago I worked as a transport manager for a firm with company drivers, the Strathclyde police where particularly hot on this, if they got a parking ticket or the car was caught going through a speed camera, they only have the registered address to send the summons too. In many cases such summonses have sections for you to list the actual driver and send it back for who ever to re issue the summons. The Strathclyde police at that time was particularly objectionable to this, they worked on the principle the registered keeper was responsible, the company should have the car registeered in their drivers name. They would not accept the extra work in getting the summons to the driver, the argument companies use against this is that they get the tax renewal notices and could not rely on thier drivers to pass them on, and in many cases the insurance companies want the car registered in the name of the policy holder.

I am not sure if this ever changed, but as said do not get the number shown on the registration doc confused with actual owners, it may not be.

I don't understand this obsession with leather. Its cold and sticky to sit on, its slippery when hot and soaks up the heat when the sun shines and burns your backside. Its also requires more looking after to keep it supple, and to add insult to injury it costs an extra £1500 when new.

Its a kind of logic of 'ooh its an expensive car it must have leather', go for cloth any day, who wants to sit on a dead cow, but perhaps I'm biased:)

I'd go for the 2007 2.0T, fabulous engine with great acceleration and exhaust note. If you do a big mileage then you may want to consider the more economic diesel, not as fast or as quite but full of gutsy torque.

That's what I always understood before I ever had a car with leather upholstery, but now after having 3 in a row with it I wouldn't want anything else. It really isn't cold and sticky or hot and sweaty. Nor is it slippery. It's a natural fibre and changes to suit your own body as such. It breathes, cools and warms!

They say up-market cars need it from a resale point of view. A dealer would knock thousands off say a Mercedes being traded in without leather because it's just expected by buyers.

Stoddy, before you buy at Nottingham check out Herron at Newark. Redimps and I both bought (albeit new) from here and they are exceptional VW dealers and also know a lot about the EOS (speak with Phillip). The only thing I do know about Nottingham is when I came to trade in my mini for the EOS my wife rang them along with several other VW dealers to get a trade in price, first they were a bit snooty so she just said thanks and goodbye, then they rang back (probably after checking that she was telling the truth about other prices she had been offered) and offered her a higher price to trade in and buy from them - told them too late we were ordering from Herron's and Herrons equaled their trade in price for the mini - result. Good luck

You mirror my thoughts exactly davidp.

After I had ordered our EOS the salesman admitted that he had once left the demonstrator outside awaiting a test drive, and when the customers arrived and attempted to sit in the car it was impossible. He had to put the roof up and run the a/c on max for 1/2 an hour before the car became habitable!

OK this is Queensland, [where towels are routinely placed on leather seats to keep them cool, it being just a little warmer here than UK], and the EOS leather looks great, but surely the main reason for buying a used car is to save cash? The EOS is a nice car, but it is not in the same price bracket as a Mercedes/BMW etc sports car where leather is a must. If £50 a month on gas is a deal breaker between petrol and diesel then why not get cloth seats and a more elaborate technical spec, or a newer car for the same money?

Most accessories, especially cosmetic ones, on a car depreciate at a considerably higher rate than the base vehicle, and dealers will tell you anything at trade-in time, [or anytime come to think of it!] Here we have the additional factor that the purchase price of an EOS, [including the delivery scam that UK has sensibly legislated against], is perilously close to the luxury car tax threshold, so your A$3300 leather option might well in fact cost over A$4000, near £2000 for the cheapest of the leathers available. It is astonishing what a fully optioned EOS will set you back here, and we don't even get the V6.

So, if style is top priority, go for leather, and part of the EOS appeal IS style, but I'll stick to cloth thanks.

Had the car for a few days now, weather has been fab down in Buckinghamshire and Berkshire. Really enjoying it and proud to be part of the 'club'! It drives a lot smoother than I thought it would. Thanks for all the advice, it helped greatly in my decision.

Just wanted to say thanks for the advice all, I am loving the car and not had any leaks 'touch wood'. After a long bout of rain and the car has been stationary when you open the door, it chucks out a load outside the car, but I hear this is normal. It doesnt bother me tbh. Its really quick and I average about 33.4 mpg. Foot can be heavy on regular occasion too!) I am thinking about a remap and debadge this month. But I am in love with her. For a sports car they cruise so well. I commute 100 miles each day to and from work and its not a issue.

Simon, its a 2006 2.0 TFSI sport in Silver, with the 17 westwoods and leather and the multi function wheel. Only thing I really miss is cruise control!
