It seems that there is quite a wide cross section of opinion on this topic. I have had several new cars and always kept them below 4000rpm for the first 1000 miles and tried not to drive at a constant speed for too long a period.

However, several dealers will tell you that there is no need to run new cars in anymore as the engines are already run in on the test bench before being fitted in the cars.

How did you run your EOS in?

Hi Gavin,
The manual states 'Up to 1000 kilometres do not drive faster than three quarters of top speed - do not use full throttle - avoid high engine speeds - do not tow a trailer. From 1000 to 1500 k speeds can be gradually increased to max rpm and road speed. If the engine is run in gently, the engine life will be increased and oil consumption reduced'. This is what my dealer advised too. It was tough, but I did it for 1500 miles, and I'm pleased. It helped to lose weight on my right foot too.

I followed the book ... exactly the same as Gurny Club. Was no real hardship:
1.) 75% of top speed is still well over 120 kph
2.) I don't ever plan to tow with my EOS
3.) 1000 kms isn't far for a new car in great weather!
Cheers!

I treated mine very gently (keeping revs down) for the first 500 miles then did nothing else. After that I considered it run in as far as I was concerned. (Long engine life is someone elses problem.)

Drive it like a hire car!!

I drove mine flat out down the Autobahn with a large caravan attached. I the took it to Glastonbury where I beached it in mud and ragged it some more to get it out, (sounded like Shirley Bassey). I normally put it through really old carwashes to help the paint set. 40 **** a day without using the window or ashtray is also a hoot.

PS Eos for sale, one careful owner with low mileage.

This is a spoof only joking!!!! I just cruised everywhere and changed the oil after about 1200 miles just to clear the last of the "iron filings" that engines produce in the early days. If thats not mechanical love I don't know what is.

RgdS Paj
PPS I don't smoke either (but the car does, bum bum):D
