Something that I am a little concerned about. Black looks fantastic when clean but not so great when even a little dusty.

Does anybody know of a 'wonder' polish that helps to keep the paintwork gleaming and looking clean even when a little dirty? Is it possible to build up layers of polish over time?

Hello Gavin,
I am no expert car detailing products and everyone has an opinion on what they like and why they like it....I can only tell you what I have used on my black beauty which is Zaino All In One. Why, because I had heard good things about it. It is a sealant, not a wax and the concensus is that a sealent lasts longer than a wax.
Having said that, we haven't seen rain where I live in months, and my car is garaged so the cars biggest enemy right now is dust.
Black is hard to keep clean no matter what, but I can say that the product I mentioned above gave my EOS a shine that I could never get from the wax type products I used to use.
Lastly, and someone correct me if I am wrong, it's my understaning that you can put a "pure" carnuba wax over a sealent and some people do just that.
Just realize that everytime you wash, dry and seal or wax your car, you take the risk of adding fine scratches by accident.
Just my 2 cents.

As our great outgoing leader 'Tone' would say ( add 'um's and eyes darting up and down, to choice ) "Black is great, it's new, it's the way forward, it's the only choice, the new one to strive to, it'll get dirty...yeah...but only to show how good even dirty new black is compared to other old colours...yeah? I mean, y'know, what's your chauffeur doing?"
Shaking head, back in my voice, scary that, after two black cars, no matter what you do black cars show dirt, nature of the beast. Careful wax and then spray from a distance, remembering never pressure hose above door level.
