I know exactly how you feel because I've been there more than once. I do have a humorous story about wheel scrapes. A few years ago I was driving my wife's pristine Acura TL with fancy wheels and I did the same thing you did. It was a nasty scrape. I was afraid to tell her so I called around and found a replacement wheel (around $300) which I had installed on the car.
Then, about 2 months later, my wife comes home and tells me she put a nasty scrape on the SAME WHEEL! My first thought was that if I had done nothing about my scrape, I would have dodged the $300 bullet. I don't think she would have noticed my scrape until it came time to wash the car.
Some of the advise here is that over time this will fade from your memory. I DON'T think so. I also put a ding on one of my Mustang wheels (again at $300 a copy) and every time I drove that car until I traded it in for my Eos, I saw the scrape as I approached the car.
If you're not going to get your scrape fixed, my advise is to put the wheel on the non-driver's side so you won't see it as often.
