I expereince my first (and trust only) difficulty with my new Eos (4 days old and only 180 miles) this morning.

Unfortunately jack frost caught many napping over night and in my area it dropped to -1. Because on opening the doors it relies on the windows dropping away from the seals by 1/2 inch or so, the ice had totally frozen them, both on the drivers and passenger doors.

With a bit of coaxing and the use of some de icer (keen not to rip the doors open and damage the seals) I finally got the doors open, but then found on closing the windows where still too high and they would not slipt into the rubber seals, but lay proud on top.

Because mine is the MY09 model, I had always anticipated that if I unfortunately experienced any weeping on the roof seals it would possibly be during the winter from resting snow on the roof. To this end I had always told myself whilst waiting delivery and reading the many threads, that I would buy myself a half top cover.

Guess what from my experiences this morning, I ordered one on eBay 20 minutes ago.

Otherwise the car is great, have to keep telling myself it is a diesel, I have been able to get "roof down" motoring on 4 occasions over the last three days, great experience.

I don't see any "half" car covers on eBay, but there are several full body covers available for less than $50 including shipping. While I don't know what a half cover is, I would assume it only covers the top and all the windows. If that is so, it would seem likely to blow away in any wind.

To find them on eBay, search "eos car covers".

While I don't need one since my car spends the night in the garage, if I were going to get one of these covers, I would go for the "whole meal deal". Much less chance of it blowing away or the car getting dinged by someone opening a door into the side of the Eos.

Top covers

Hi Kitenski, Eos_up

They are there

Try looking for "Outdoor Waterproof Car Top Cover", the one I got hold of was medium size. The current item number is 280236847252.

The seller was fineautocare, I must admit I ordered one abut two weeks ago and got it the day after I paid, the one I ordered earlier today is going to be for my partners Passat.

I have just been outside and tried to take a picture for you of the cover I have fitted tonight on the Eos, stupidly I never fitted it last night and got caught out, but it is on tonight as the weather is forecast as minus 2 again.

By the way it is the only one I found on the web, let alone eBay which states waterproof, all the others claim water resistant. There are many even as low as £9.99, but I went on the principle you get what you pay for and I liked the idea of the elastic ties to fix it, which as you can see just slip under the bumpers.

Regards Derek

top covers

Just a footnote to my earlier post, I had a top cover for my Morgan when we had it (sold the Morgan last year and used the money against a Motorhome, RV for our American cousins).

That cover was also held on by the elastic ties and never had any trouble, by the way the pic does not show it too well but over the doro mirrors it is black elastic pockets the mirrors fit into.

Thanks for this very useful information.

This cover will be ideal for use in our summer periods to stop the inside of the car turning into an oven and the windows "fogging" due to the plasticiser evaporating from the vinyl interior fittings. You have your frost/ice problems; we have heat problems.

The mirror pockets are indicative of the quality of the product IMHO.

Just an update

It did freeze last night, though not as much as the weather forcast had anticipated.

In the exposed areas of the car not covered by the "top cover" I did have a thin covering of ice, the result I got was what I was hoping for, the windows and doors where completely free.

Seems to work for me, as advised there are cheaper ones, those who may follow and take the same action as me should seek what they want, and decide which fits their pocket and requirements.

Hi Derek,

A quick question regarding the cover you bought on e-bay. Are you able to fold the wing mirrors back with it on or do the pockets stop you from doing that?

Ah yes, THAT problem!! I don't usually mind at home, as I use warm water for the ice and/or de-icer. Its not so much of a problem to open the door, but shutting it is a different matter!
Unfortunately earlier this year I was off to sunnier climbs, and had stayed near Heathrow overnight. In the morning, I got up to drive my car to the long term car park, and there had been a sudden drop in temperature, and the car was totally iced up. The driver door opened ok - did realise it was quite as bad as it was, but i'd got boxed in that side by a giant 4x4, so had to try and open the passenger door - whilst blowing on the ice = crawl over the seat, and try and put the heating on. Off course i had no de-icer left, and was getting nowhere fast. In the end i had to drive the car out of its spot, doors ajar, and peering through a small hole, into a patch in the sun, till at least i could shut the doors! Then head inside for some water! Took me over an hour!! Luckily I checked in for my flight the day before!!
