Hello everybody

I've been perusing this forum to gauge everybody’s opinion on the Eos, and it looks completely different to the forum on Top gear for the Ford Focus CC. ie everybody appears to love their car!

So far I’ve gathered that if I am to go for a diesel DSG I need to ensure that it’s the “common rail” type, but can people offer anymore help to justify a £20 odd k spend on a car…..

  • Is the Boot space sufficient? Ie if I was travelling could I put a great big suitcase in there? or as somebody else has asked me, guitars...?
  • The dealer I spoke to in Warrington states that the Eos Individual is no longer made – although it’s still on the VW site – anybody heard anything along those lines? If it is still available, is it worth the extra cost in your opinion?
  • Are there any recommendations on dealers in the North West (Manchester area) where they treat you with respect that I could potentially go to…. Warrington appeared OK, but I also want to ensure that After Sales is second to none.
  • Anybody bought their car using an internet company like deal drivers or CPC Direct to get the best prices (as far as I can gather you only then deal with a dealer, so it appears to be genuine

Any help would be gratefully received, I’ve never bought a brand new car before and still trying to justify it to myself - I’ve even looked for used Eos, but the price doesn’t appear that different.
Thanks in advance for any help :)

Hi Miss_Chilli. The Eos is indeed a fantastic car. If you do decide to go ahead, you will not be disappointed. One point which springs to mind from your queries is regarding using a broker. You are right, you will deal directly with a dealer once the broker has set it up. One thing to bear in mind is the warranty is a three year one; comprising of two year manufacturer, and one year dealer. If something goes wrong in the third year, you will have to refer to the supplying dealer which, if set up by a broker, could be an awful long way from where you live. I looked into it when buying mine, and found the difference in price only a few hundred pounds difference between the broker and list; which I managed to negotiate with the dealer anyway.

I've always found the boot space adequate. There is a bespoke pair of Eos suitcases available which fit under the partition, allowing you to lower the roof with the luggage in the boot. You couldn't fit a fortnights luggage in there, but you've always got the back seats as well.

One recommendation i would make is to get the wind deflector. With it in place, you can happily belt along at motorway speeds with very little buffeting. It makes a real difference.

I've had the odd issue with minor roof leaks, which I've had the dealer look at a couple of times, but just when I start to get irritated by it, we get a good days weather, and the roof comes down and everything is alright with the world. Certainly worth putting up with.

Hi Miss Chilli and welcome!
In answer to some of your questions;
Boot space is more than adequate. I have had 2 large samsonite cases in there as the shelf that must be pulled down to lower the roof does actually come out altogther if you need it to. I also frequently have my weekly supermarket shop in there sometimes with a pushchair too!
With regard to the Warrington dealer I think stephb can help you with that.
The diesel engine is very good but I have heard the common rail one is amazing.
All in all, the Eos is a fantastic car so much so that if I won the lottery I would still have one!

Hi chilli and welcome to the site. Most peeps on the site seem happy with the cars they have. all cars will have a fault all two. We have a lovely Eos with brill dealer backup. Yes the internet dealers are good but if you have a part ex they don't always give the best price, We got a gr8 deal buy just finding 3 vw dealers which ar't all owned by the same company and an internet deal and played them off each other. shop around. Inscape have about 4 vw dealer around manchester area but a few inderpendant dealers are around.

Not a lot of single rail engines are available at the moment as they are trying to clear old stock. You my need to order one which takes 10 to 16 weeks 12 on average. The single rail only started being installed in the Eos im May 2008.

Boot space is very good for a convertable but take your stuff to the a dealer and see if it fits in then you now. Some dealer will say yes it will but 20 + k is a lot of money so you only get one chance at it.

A new car is a big buy but you are the first owner you put on it what you want.

Things we found usefull are the wind deflector is a must, it stops the curlover from the rear area. the 2009 model has the new RCD 310 OR 510 RADIO/CD with aux in, touch srceen and menoy card slot, mp3.

you can go on the VW web site and put differant cofigurations on the options.

Take your time they want you to buy you make them work for it. If a dealer is pushing a 2008 old stock car he's geting a big discount from vw to sell them you can get more off push push push.

happy hunting

Hi Miss Chilli first of all welcome!

I got the 2.0 tdi sport so I dont really know much about the individual sorry :(
I got my car from VW Corkills Wigan but the sale part of it wasn't that good but the after care has been brilliant, someone will pick my car up take it in fix it and bring it back to me washed! I had 1 dent that i knew about took it in to get fixed they found another one removed that and touched up my stone chips for free! shaun from vw wigan is brilliant and really nice!

I did how ever ring VW Warrington for a quote on my car with all the bits and bobs i wanted on it and they came in cheaper than wigan but wigan did knock the difference off.

I also rang VW Manchester they was quite rude and wouldnt discuss the pricing on the phone and wanted me to come in. Considering i live right between wigan and warrington im not travelling that far to talk about money!

The 2.0 tdi engine is fantastic and effortless up massive hills! its just superb!

I've not attempted to but suitcases in my boot yet but im a woman and I love to shop and can fit my shopping in the boot!

HTH

If there are anymore questions you want to ask about the garages just pm me :)

Forums like this on the Internet are notorious for shouting the good points, so as a member who has owned dozens of cars from 4x4s to, well, cabriolets, I will venture to be more objective about the Eos.

Basically, it is a good car, but I would only recommend it to someone who has alternative modes of transport and/or no kids/wife/boyfriend, etc. I am lucky enough to have a Renault Espace and a Kangoo van in addition to the Eos, so all practical transportation issues can be dealt with by one of these. The Eos is really for the driver only: drop the roof and conversation above about 30mph becomes difficult owing to the noise; put the roof up and you might as well take the Espace (or whatever).

I don't regret buying my Eos, it's a great fun car, but I can only justify owning one because it's used as a third car for 1 or 2 people to enjoy.

As for the diesel, yes get the new common-rail. I had the DSG 'box on a Golf Plus I owned about 2 years ago and didn't like it. I therefore chose the manual 'box on the Eos and it's one of the nicest gearchanges I have tried.

Hi Di! lol ;) Told you to ask everyone on here and you would get honest opinions and people are much better (more experienced Eos owners!) than myself!

Thinking of buying an EOS

Steph

Tell your dealer to go back to the drawing board, the individual is definately available, there where 500 made available last year and 700 this year, I ordered one only last week, I have been given an October build date already. If you still have problems, I can confirm that as of Saturday Vindis in Bedford have a DSG but TSi in their showromm brand new only put there last Tuesday, I went there to see in the "flesh" what I am getting, so to say.

By the way I ordered a pearle black manual box (I love to be in charge) diesel common rail

Great choice! The CR TDI is a huge improvement over the old unit and, despite what the press says, I really don't like the DSG. The one I had on my Golf Plus was slow and jerky around town and not a patch on the 'proper' auto I had on my BMW 330d.

Manual box

I have been in the Motor Industry, "grease monkey" and now management for 30+ years, I do not like automatic/semi automatic, I like to feel "I am in charge" of the car, hence the order for manual. Fortunately my partner feels the same way, can't wait to get my hands on it

All a matter of opinion isnt it. I've driven both manual and automatic over the years and the EOS DSG is without doubt the smoothest auto car I have ever driven, wouldn't change it for anything else. As for 'being in charge' why waste energy changing gear when you don't have to especially driving round town, your still in charge as long as you can put your foot on the brake!
Must haves : Wind Deflector - dont let anybody tell you theyr'e a waste of money they definately are not, Cruise Control is fantastic (not for those who like to 'feel in charge' at all times tho) and make sure your dealer, who ever you go to, knows all about 'Krytox' (see many other threads on this)

Miss Chilli,

I am still in the wait mode for my Individual, (due to arrive in September) so yes it is definitely still in production. I think the issue might be that if you take the 2 litre turbo (petrol or Deisel), and add the price of the options that are included in the Individual then it comes out about the same (so no real price premium - not good for VW). It is quite a specific look, which you probably either like or dislike.

In terms of boot space, when I use my current car (a Saab 9-3 convertible) for vacations, we always re-donfigure the boot with the lid up, fill it, get to the location at speed, with the lid up, and then offload. Once all the rubbish is out, then the space is re-configured and it is lid down on location.

The VW is smaller in the book, with the lid down, than both the Peugeot and the Renault, but it looks to be a considerably better car. Lid up, it is fairly similar.

This will be the third 4-seater convertible I have owned (I have also rented several more over the years), and I am looking forward to it as I was quite impressed with the solidity of the one I drove on test drive. My routine is the same and simple: the kids (now adults, really) get in the back and decide if they can cope with the (admittedly) somewhat limited space. Then I get my shopping list...

Good luck. ON the DSG issue, I drove it on test drive but have gone for the manual because I am old fashioned and I also really enjoy gear control as part of the pleasure of driving.

I've had a huge amount of stuff in the boot for holidays/trips away on several occasions.
If you pack carefully and really fill every nook and cranny you can get heaps in, which we did going to France and STILL managed to get a case of wine in on the way back! And then we picked up my daughter and her husband on the way back and got them in the back AND their luggage in the boot!

It does mean you can't drop the roof on the drive there and back but you live with that for the fun of dropping it whilst you're there. You've always got the sunroof or the aircon which makes for a very comfortable journey anyway.

Hi Clipontheroad

I suppose I am old fashioned too, one of my other cars is a black Morgan, cream leather, chrome wire wheels (totally bling really) and that really is being in charge motoring. One of the reasons for the EOS is not only financial but we see it as a winter compromise for top down motoring, in the unlikely event of "rain" the top can be gotten up quickly, on the Morgan get caught and you really do get wet.

Miss Chilli,

Skidoo is quite right, DSG or manaul you need to get what is better suited to you, goodluck, hope you can justify it
