I was fed up with the shelf thingy in the boot so have removed it so the boot becomes a huge space ideal for golf bats (for golfists) prams and other large Ikea based objects. Now some will think that my roof won't work, but I have overcome this by a cheap bodge. I have taped together two AAA batteries from my TV remote control (I'm using duracell for longer life). this is then put against the switch on the left side of the boot where the cover thingy would sit. When I intend to fold the roof down I simply confirm I haven't been golfing, procreating or visiting Ikea and then activate the roof.
I've had this car for 6 months and will be selling it in 6 months and I still haven't decided if I will buy another. I still think people look at the Eos and then mentally question either my sexuality, appendage or wonder if I'm bi-curious. It is a wonderful piece of engineering but there are to many shortfalls. Yes I know all the best cars in the world have shortfalls look at Ferrari's, TVR's and Lambo's.

Wow, so you bypassed a safety feature on your roof system. I don't question your manhood, but I do question your intelligence. That cover is there as a safety feature for your roofs protection. I guess if you want to bypass it, its your call.

I bought the car for its total design flexibility, and if you look at the list of cars that homosexuals buy, you will find a lot of cars that heterosexuals buy as well. This car is getting rave reviews by many different people and whether or not people are gay, straight, male or female...this car kicks a$$.

I am a 6'3" man who wears pink shirts, and drives an eos. I have no problem with my sexuality, I LOVE women (my wife especially).

Anyone who reads this guy's idea, do it at your own risk. I personally think it is NUTS.

I tend to agree that removing the roof resting place support is problably not a sensible thing to do from an engineering or safety perspective.

Hmmmm! Each to their own Paj, I'm pretty secure in my sexuality! But do you have any driving/technical reasons for not being 100% about the car?? I've driven a Ferrari on normal UK roads, and even had I the money it's just not a car I admire enough to buy, so personal taste is as important as practicality/performance!

must admit it went through my mind but after seeing the damage done to the roof when a woman left just a cornflake box on one side of the raised boot , decided against it
i do remove the cover now and again but always put it back
i dont disagree with the idea in principle but whatever the work around it should be one that MAKES you check the boot every time before lowering

Secure!

Well I'd like to think that I'm not so insecure that I would trade any car, regardless of whether I liked it or not, because someone might question my sexuality! In fact I know I'm not. On top of that, just love my EOS and wouldn't dream of tampering with any of the safety features. To each his own!

people ask me all the time: "hey arch....", ...and I;m like... "yo", and they're like "so why do you new cars, why don't you get a used one", and I say its because people don't know how to respect property even if it was theirs. they don't break in the engines properly, they don't operate the car properly, as is the case with you Paj45, and in the end, they sell the car for a reason. As a used car buyer, you never know the reason. So why should I want to buy a used car where I'll inherit all of the long term problems from a buyer that never properly broke in the car or never maintained or treated the car right!!!!

I'm curious, Paj45, did you properly break in the car or were you red-lining the tach as you drove from the dealership...

So folks seeing EOS with a couple of grand on the tach on ebay, i'd beware. Those used cars were often used to see if the EOS drives like a GTI by folks that treat cars with a certain disposability.

So in this case, the car has been operated without the shelf to rest the roof. Something it was designed more. So you have potentially roof alignment issues down the road.

So in the end, this suggestion and the purpose of this thread seems useless and may damage the car. I hope the moderator sees fit to delete this thread.

Where did you see that problem?
Archie,
Look for the thread "Don't try this" in VW Q&A by IanJ. Looks like you were on the thread earlier, so you may have seen it by now!

wow, some harsh replies. Is it the time of the month for us girly EOS drivers!:D  :D

I do agree that the modification is a no-no, but it's only as bad as the after-market units that so many people are fitting to their Eoses that enable the roof to be closed whilst in motion. Yet they aren't getting the slagging that the OP is getting on here.

As to the "gay" comment, I think the EOS is one of the more masculine looking convertibles. Most convertibles will get you a "gay" jibe from time to time. I tend not to get many comments being over 6' and 16st at my lightest! (all muscle....honest!!:p ). If you look at the "my rides" thread, I also drive my wifes two seater red convertible which, even I, think is a bit of a girls car. BUT I DON'T CARE because it's a hoot to drive and two fingers up to people who have a problem with it.

All I'm saying is give the guy a break.

Oh, and archiea, you say it would be an idea to delete this thread. I do understand, but I can also see the point of view that it would be good to leave it on, just so anyone considering this mod would see how stupid an idea it is to every other EOS owner on here.

Shelf in boot

The roof doesn't actually rest on the shelf (it's only a flimsy thing after all) which is there just to stop you loading goods into the area the roof takes up when stowed.

I have taken the shelf out once or twice just to get large objects into the boot but would ALWAYS put it back.

If you were simply to rely on remembering not to put stuff too high in the boot without any physical guide to stop you then sooner or later there's going to be a disaster! And if it's a solid enough object in the boot then the roof may never recover...

Right to reply

Well ladies and Gentlemen, that went down well didn’t it! I think I should have a right to reply to that onslaught (though many thanks to those allowing my opinions and ideas to be aired however good or bad). The sexuality comment was as it states “I still think….” Some seem to have got into a right tizz. I don’t wish to get into a debate over “societies views on cars and horizontal entertainment”, let us continue to pay homage to a great piece of engineering.
Am I bad for “tampering” with the car? Isn’t lowering it and fitting 19 inch rims tampering with the car and these could invalidate warranty (I say could because I’m not an expert on vehicle geometry and warranties etc), nobody has said they are bad or wrong (I think those 19’s do look fantastic). What I have done is enable ME to drive the car in the style I choose, and then if required put something in the boot (which is normally empty) without removing the shelf and asking the kids or wife to hold it on their lap (yes I use all 4 seats).
Rest assured I have read the manual; I know how to load it, run it in, wash it, put the wipers up, how the tyre pressure monitor works and even operate the rear wash wipe?.
I also came in for some special treatment for owning the car for a year and tar’d with an Ebay brush! My job has a perk of being able to buy a tax free car every year so why not play the field. This is a good car that holds its value, people want it and I wanted it, else I wouldn’t have bought it. (Do you think I would thrash the nuts off something I own and intend to sell? Think about it!) I do hope I’m not in for another barrage because I don’t pay tax on a car, I have recently served in some evil parts of Iraq and Afghanistan (cheers Tony and George haha). I hope to enjoy a fantastic summer with the Eos, getting used to people looking at it/me and then find out if I get another one and where Gordon and Hillary? Send us next.

You know, VW blatenly says that its marketing to women (I think from 35-55 or something), so in a way I blame VW for some of what Paj says.

I'm a bit sensitive to the notion of "chick cars" because living here in LA, it seems that 'dudes" are supposed to drive cars that are:
1) as close to 4 sec cars as possible
2) Grossly disproportionate rims compared to the body, only aggrivated with 1.5 " body clearances with the ground
3) "angry" looking car facades
4) hard, deep "sport" seats with spartan interiors that smell like gasoline
5) hiphop being the OFFICIAL soundtrack of all fast-n-furious-n-littledicked crowd
6) absolutely obnoxious body kits that ruin whatever good lines the original car had.
7) 4 bangers having way too loud exhaust that don't even sound like cars. I mean 1/12 scale RC cars sound better....
8) more neon like lighting kits than any 70's era disco dance club
9) the philosophy that more is more and is even MORE with everything from HP to crap fiberglassed onto the car, to the wattage of the amps to the demeaning of women to the sheer butchering of the english language with rich white and asian kids talking faux ebonics. WTF?
10) Plastic "chrome" and the notion of "bling" ... 'nuff said.

So basically if its not uncomfortable, impractical, sporting some rediculas mod while scraping the ground, its not a dude's car.

Small foreign cars, like 2 seater roadsters, some with decent mileage and ok performance? chick car. Any mustang that is not borderline emission legal... chick car. Any car that sports any sense of posh or luxury that does NOT handle like its on Rails AND offer better than 5.5 sec times is a chick car. Light interior = chick car. Elegance = chick car. Thunderbird not looking like a 90's aero design disaster and not mod-able to be a drag racer = chick car. it goes on. Crap, to be a dude with remotely any taste, especially one that is unique and not part of the group-think-de-jour 'tuner" is a ***!

sorry to pounce on you Paj, but you inadvertenly struck a nerve! :D BTW thanks for your service abroad in fawkupistan or wherever it is. Stay safe!
