Has anyone fitted an Ipod link to their car? Just wondered how easy it was and if any make seems to work the best etc etc.

I believe a Dension one would be the best to go for but any advice would be great.

Thanks

I just ordered the Peripheral Technology PGHVW1 Media Gateway. $130 US.

It provides control for an iPOD using your 2006-2008 non-navigation VW factory radio. It has full song and artist display on the radio, and full access to iPOD by artist, album, playlist using the buttons on the radio and the buttons on the steering wheel.

It comes with a plug and play harness. I plan to use in place of the VW factory iPOD adapter that has the very limited functionality.

I will post a thread with a review and some photos next week after it arrives and I install it.

I have the standard radio, and am using the MPS input jack with my ipod for now. It works OK, but you have to use the controls on the ipod to start/stop/select playlists, etc.

My understanding is that if I had bought the $200 VW ipod option, I would lose the universal MP3 input and instead get a dedicated ipod connection. I think that means that data as wellas music would go the radio, so the song/artist info woudl be displayed, as well giving me the ability to change playlists....? Is that correct? If so, it might we worth going back to the dealer.

I didn't see much point as it doesn't list tracks or artists.

I've just bought THIS which I have to say is superb. The quality is great, it can be swivelled to a good spot where it's easy to see and change track and it charges the ipod/iphone as well. Perhaps not as neat as a cable but works for me. PEN

But does the VW ipod link let you use the buttons on the right side of the radio (cat/fldr) to navigate through your playlists?

And does it also charge the ipod?

Still trying to figure out if it is worth it.....

I don't know anything about the ipod link.

The Griffin is a remote device that just plays the music through your car speakers (via FM). It does charge the ipod/iphone and you can change tracks only via the ipod or the griffin - not via the radio.

I have the Griffin, it works really well. Just set Ipod to shuffle when leaving and I 'm set for the journey. Bought in Apple store who recommended it even though it was not an Apple branded product.

Yes, at least in the '09 Eos, the factory iPod option replaces the 3.5mm aux-in (MP3) jack in the armrest console. The iPod adapter has a slot inside the console for your iPod, but you can't access the iPod once it's in place. From what I've read and evolvingpowercat confirms, iPod owners aren't too happy with its limited functionality. The reason it's such a kludge is because all VW did was spoof the head unit into thinking it had a CD changer connected. My wife and I have generic MP3 players, so I removed the unwanted iPod adapter that came on our Eos and replaced it with a Blitzsafe aux-in adapter.

Yep, I have a 2008 with factory installed i-pod dock in armrest. It has very limited function. No names, titles, nada. It also shorted out in less than a year, and was replaced with the same crappy dock as the one before it.
For the price, VW should have put buttons on the steering wheel, bluetooth, amd a better stereo system. I thought the premium system upgrade would be better than what I got.
Stereo and limited gadets inside, you still get one sweet ride!

I have the iPod dock in the arm rest and have no moans about it personally. Yes it has limited function, but once my music is on and the roof is off, thats all I need !
As Lopaka says 'Stereo and limited gadgets' still doesn't deter from 'one sweet ride'.

In the UK, the '09 model year did not have the iPOD connector option for the armrest, however since when I ordered mine, I had included this, the VW garage fitted an approved (I think aftermarket) wire connector, which was quite convenient, as it meant I could just keep my old iPOD nano in the little compartment outboard of the steering wheel, by the driver's door, which I would otherwise use for loose change.

That being said, it is certianly a kluge because I cannot see any tracks names, I cannot control it directly, and whilst the instructions claim that it recognizes play lists, it doesn't if they are defined on the iPOD itself (at least, and becuase it is an old one, I have not re-connected it to try downloading playlists). So every time I switch it on, it starts over at track one, because switching off the engine does not switch off the iPOD so it simply runs flat.

Now, I like the Allman Brothers (which happens to be the first alphabetic record) but not EVERY time I drive. In order to select something else, you have to disconnect the iPOD, select your track or album, set it to play and then connect it. WHich assumes you have enough battery left to do that (!).

Granted, you can do a mix from the central control and that enables a shuffle, but you still cannot have any sort of control.

Also, it picks up the ignition whine quite badly, very intrusive if I happen to be in a classical mood.

Finally, yesterday, my iPOD was completely wiped. Whether that is anno domini for my iPOD of whether it was due in some way to the iPOD connector, I don't yet know.

So, overall, it is OK, I suppose, but not worth the £150 I was charged for it, nowhere near. I have a US Griffen which I sometimes use but where I live the FM stations are pretty dense and it keeps copping out. ON the other hand, the '09 model does have the AUX jack in the armrest box, and a power supply (but this is facing the back seats, outside the armrest box), so I could go that route if I chose.

Hope this helps. It is not meant to be a rant but my son's Peugeot 107 is just as well equipped!

Cheers

Chip
