Issue with DSG slipping out of gear ** RESOLVED **

Hey folks -
Got a bit of a problem with my wife's EOS. Our VW tech is puzzled by it, and hasn't been able to reproduce the problem.

At steady highway speeds, in manual mode in 6th gear, when I let up a little on the throttle, it appeared that the transmisison slipped into neutral. The light on the dash which indicates you are in neutral or park (ok to remove key?) also flashed on. This happened a couple of times - in 6th and 5th.

When I switched it back to auto mode, the P-R-N-D-S lights blinked.

This slipping into neutral also happened when my wife was driving it in 'auto' mode as well.

Anyone see this? Know what's going on?

The car is a 2009 with 3300 miles on the clock. And yes, we're both adults and don't drive the car harshly.

Sounds like a problem with the selector switch. It is unlikely to be gearbox issue. I suspect the gearbox is being "told" to go into neutral!

Back to the dealer with that one so they can do a can bus test on the selector lever...

Hmm - thanks for that info -- they did not see any typical faults thrown - but not all faults reach it to the CPU....

Thanks,

** UPDATE **
They found the problem - it is a bad transmission temperature sensor. Part needs to be shipped from Germany, so the car willl be there for 7-10 days. Mrs. Z-man is NOT happy.

Now, that is a surprise... That should put the box in safe mode, not disengage it...

I guess the P-R-N-D-S lights flashing should have been a clue... It kinda discredits what I said before about the selector switch. I should read posts more carefully! :)

Got the car back yesterday - drove it to work - no issues thus far. Hopefully the replacement of the sensor fixed the problem.

Dealer did give us a loaner car - a Toyota Camry. What a solid car - it can probably go 300,000 miles, unless you shoot yourself of boredom sooner! That car has no personality, no passion, no enthusiast appeal.... but I digress....

Nice to have the Eos back. ;)

Just a quick note on a related topic:

The NHTSA has opened an investigation into the VW DSG transmission:

NHTSA Report said:
ODI has received 12 Vehicle Owner complaints (VOQ's) alleging incidents of loss of motive power while driving due to a malfunction of the Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) transmission used in the subject vehicles. In most incidents, the DSG malfunction either spontaneously self-corrected or was temporarily corrected after the engine was stopped and restarted. Three complaints indicate that the vehicle had to be towed. In addition, ODI has received 15 complaints alleging safety concerns with harsh shifting either during low speed parking maneuvers, while accelerating from a stop or during upshifts/downshifts at speed. A Preliminary Evaluation has been opened to assess the frequency and safety consequences of the DSG transmission malfunctions.
