VW have today agreed to change our car for a new one.

I am going to see the dealer tomorrow to discuss all of the options, such as my GAP policy, paying montly repayments on a car that I will no longer have as I will be waiting for a new one, the spec, whether or not to go for Xenons again etc.

They said that a nationwide search found 2 EOS's of similar spec, both of which are approximately halfway through production and (they think) not destined for customers but for showrooms instead. If they can intercept either of these orders then we may not have to wait months and months like we did for our first EOS.

I do agree with IanJ, VW Customer Service and dealer service departments have so far let us down considerably and I am yet to see anything that would redeem them in my opinion.

I will post more information tomorrow when I have a clearer idea of what's happening.

Hi Gavin,
So sorry it got so screwed up, but hope you get a quick, positive, and happy reconcilliation. In retropect, you may be wiser to pocket the difference and scrub the bi xenon option on your next car. Besides, you are usually on your computor at night, not driving! Good luck, Mate!

It seems the general feeling amongst Eos drivers here is that whilst the vehicle may be good, the after sales support is rubbish - incl product knowledge.

This bothers me a lot & reading Gavster's posts in particular...doesn't inspire me with any great confidence in their customer care.
You guys should be getting the premium after sales support & service - with a smile from VW no less.
This is surely one of - if not the strongest sales region for them?

If you get it bad over there - how is it going to be for me in Sydney?!

I had a Passat for four years as a company car. Did 96k miles and it let me down twice - first was a failed battery (they happen), second it had discharged the battery with an "everything off" current of nearly 2 amps. That is twice more than the current Honda has done in 107k.

It was delivered with incorrectly wired lights in the spoiler.
VW changed the head unit because the CD changer would not do something the book said it would do, then when it still would not do it denied it should do it!
They swore blind it could not do somthing it clearly did!
The car would go in for service and they would not do everything that should have been done . .
And this was not one dealer, I tried 4 and all were equally bad. I swore no more VWs.

But then SWMBO wanted an EOS - now she says no more VWs!

Well, I have had two TT's, one which had major issues and the other which was ok'ish. One SEAT Ibiza Sport which had no problems and a Leon Cupra R which had to have the ECU replaced as the car accelerated on it's own.

Now, another brand that I have owned a few of is Nissan. Three cars without so much as a problem.

That must say something about Japanese over German...

Gavin,

At least you have a swap for a new one. I would avoid the bi-xenon lights like the plague now. Even if they work first time you know that they don't know anything about them should they go wrong again.

Awaiting your next report. Best of luck.

Best of luck mate!

This is my first VW and so far, my experience with the dealer and VW has been fine. Only one warranty job so far (although I did it myself with them watching!). I will try and fix everything and only send to dealer as last resort. Sometimes, people will get a lemon, it's just bad luck. If the issues are fundamental, then the dealer is never going to get anywhere....

Hopefully your experience with a new EOS will be much better and have a happy ending!

Best wishes

VW Dealers

Must say that even though they seem to lack knowledge generally and (like all Dealers) are happy to charge you top whack my Dealer has tried hard to be helpful and give a good service.

So far under warranty they have changed a foglight which was cracked (probably a stone), the plastic cover for lh side headlight washer (which simply vanished) and the wind deflector. All these they could have argued about but they changed them without any trouble.

Although it goes against the grain I must award them full marks!

Simon ... all the more power to you, if you decide to do your own service because you don't trust your dealer! But that option does not exist for the vast majority of us ... we are not mechanics and we bought an automobile which included a warranty. The long and short of it is that VW have one of the worst records in the industry for service and reliability. They may design incredible products, but they don't keep them on the road properly, and that is why the Japanese car makers are knocking the spots off them ... because you can trust their cars! Gavin's mishaps is a classic .... it is ludicrous that after all the chances they had to repair his car, they prove to be absolute fumblebums because they can't get his lights working properly. Frankly, they should be giving him the option of a 100% refund and let him make a purchase of another brand he can trust!

I think that each dealer is different..... Some will be good and some will be bad.... I have mostly had Japanese cars so far (Except a Merc and a Smart Car).... All Nissan and Toyota... Both those makes have been excellent cars and excellent service. Toyota still is (I now have a Prius)... People still go on about german build quality and I guess it must have some truth... Compare the amount of 20 year old Golf's on the road compared to other makes!

What was wrong with your wind deflector (out of curiosity)... Don't suppose it was the little rubber feet on the left and the right getting ripped off the car when you lifted it per chance??

The reality of it is Simon ..... Toyota has the best record for car longevity, far better than VW! Don't get me wrong, I love my EOS, but I am not married to VW and bought it for it's unique appeal and features, in spite of the fact I had and still have concerns over it's reliability. Frankly, it is highly doubtful I will keep it past 50 to 75% of the warranty period.

It was the rear deflector that fits over the rear seats. It's made in several pieces and where the plastic-glassfibre corner bit fits into the alloy tube along the bottom the lug broke off so the whole thing was no good any more - the netting came out and it all flexed too much. It was replaced under warranty because they have had the same thing happen to a few Beetle ones. Much to my relief I must say as new ones cost an exortionate amount, although one did appear on ebay at a starting price of £100 at the time. Don't know how much it actually went for though.

I'm afraid I must agree with SHF here. I bought it because of similar reasons uniqueness, and GTi engine. I also thought that VW engineering and reliability was excellent (all the 20y old Golfs) but hearing of the dealer problems and engineering ones I think I will keep it only till the residuals make it worthwhile to change.

Fred, any idea of the trade in value in Canada? I did not like the sound of £17.5k trade in for a about a 1y old model. Seems very steep for a classy car like the Eos. I think we were all surprised here at that statistic.

Regards

Hi Graham I don't have too many statistics available here, but did see a couple of used EOS' listed with approximately 15000 kms. In both cases, they were asking about 8-10% less than full new retail selling price. (Same model as mine has $43,500 list price and $40,000 asking price for car with mileage listed above) Considering the big depreciation is normally in the first year, that is excellent retention! In fairness, there are not many new ones available, which certainly helps to hold the price up. On the other hand, Canadian dollar has risen dramatically against US dollar in past 6 months, and two currencies are now roughly equal. A year ago EOS in Canada was 23% more tnan in US. That has to change and will likely lower used car values. Sorry for the long winded reply!

Thanks for that. I have not seen any second hand ones other than ex demo ones but they still seem to be asking high prices the models are high spec and about 6m old with a list price of about £26k selling at £24k. It looks to me like a case of down right profiteering on the part of the dealers when they are offering 17.5k for a 25k list. I suspect it would end up on the forecourt at least at 22K not a bad profit for a desirable car.
