Hello everyone, Well we took delivery of our new EOS on Friday 26/1. a 2007 model 2.0L TFSI. Car is fantastic - love it. drove it out of the showroom and after about 10 minutes I could hear a knocking noise every now and then in the rear. Pulled out spare, tools, boot cover, plastic covers etc,....... - noise not from boot compartment. It is there when you go over bumps or uneven road. It sounds like an old car with a worn shock, or a hatchback with the parcel shelf not in properly. It is there at 5kph or 100kph. It is there when the roof is up. Put the roof down and the noise is gone. If you go over a speed hump dead straight it will not make a noise. Go around the bend where the chasis twists a little and there it is !!! Coming from the 'C' pillar. Anyway, took it back to dealer and dropped it at service centre and had to pay for a flight back to Sydney. (Dealer is 900klm away). Rang VW and have a hire car for 5 days. Not happy. spend $60K on your dream car and you get a bad knocking noise. Anyway I would love to hear from anyone if they have had problems. Will post updates and let you know what it is when I find out in case I can help anyone else. Dealer has been good and said they would keep me updated. Unsure how long this will take and what the exact problem is. Thanks in advance, Rowan.:(

I get a knocking from the rear when the roof is up and going over some rough road. It is not present when the roof is stowed in the boot. I have just assumed its something I have to live with when you have a hard top convertable. I think its where the rear window frame hits the top of the boot, but I may be wrong.

Anyway I just live with it cause the car is so good otherwise.

I had / have the same problem, only when the roof is up. The car was at the dealer for 5 days for the problem to be fixed, even a dude from VW Australia went to the dealership to assist. Got the car home, opened the roof, went for a drive, closed the roof, got stuck halfway, had to drive home slowly with the boot lid sticking up in the air. When they put the roof mechanism back in place, they didn't clip the boot liner in properly and it jammed the roof mechanism. The knocking noise is still present but not as bad. I told the dealer that I don't want them touching that problem again. I think I know what it is, the mechanism on the passenger side feels loose compare to the drivers side. That is what the problem is. Dont know why they cant fix it. I had HUGE problems as a result of tinting the windows. The door trims weren't put back on properly and therefore I had a problem with rattles and squeaks from the dashboard area and there was a dozen trips to the dealer before they sussed it out. They also had to re-align the drivers side door which they got wrong. The car is pretty good now, just a rattle in the door and knocking sound from the boot. I don't want the dealer touching it again. In short the car should have been prepared a lot better prior to delivery.

had similar knocking noise with roof up, sounded as if it was from boot was resolved by dealership by adjusting the rear quarter panel of the roof. talking to mechanic he had come across it before and after driving knew exactly was it was.

Knocking Noise In Eao

Hi

I live in the UK and took delivery of my EOS some 3 months ago. Great car, save the knocking noise you report, in particular from passenger side rear (UK - right hand drive!) - this happened when I drove over pot holes etc. Spent sometime convincing agent there was a problem and then researched US VW forum to find link to VW 'fix' as follows:

http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=3498504

Pointed it out to agent, who then told me their 'demonstrator' had same problem! Then found VW UK had also just introduced similar special service instruction. It was fixed in a day and noise has gone away but I am told it is now a common fault on recent EOS.

Hope this helps

Thanks Nigelsud for the link to the other threads. That was great, Thankyou to all who have replied to my post. It seems there are heaps of this problem happening. Wouldn't you think they would get it right at production! My car has been 4 days now at dealer and they are still trying to find the problem. Something has happened and now the roof is not working. Dealership is very good and assure me they will resolve the problem. All contact has been good. Talk about taking the shine off getting a new VW. Thanks again for your help.

Well no progress. The car is now over 2 weeks of sitting at the dealers. They hit a hurdle and did something to the roof and now it iss locked between open and close and they are now waiting on technical advise to open it and fix it before they can resume trying to fix the problem. From the information I have the technical support from VW is vey poor. Very slow.
.
I can not believe how may people are having this problem with the EOS but yet nothing gets done about it at production and quality control.

Do you laugh or cry? I can assure you when I find out what it was or how to fix it I will let you know. Nigelsud - I sent them the tech support you sent me about the shims but they stated it has already been tried and it wasn't the problem. Will keep you updated. Regards, Rowan.

Well I said I would keep everyone updated with my Knocking Noise. As stated earlier roof stopped working. they went to overide it with computer but still nothing. After some time VW sent a technical adviser to have a look at the problem. The roof is absolutely history - in bits and pieces everywhere, still not working and the knocking noise is still there but not been able to look at it because of the roof. VW solution was to put a new roof on the existing car. the Manager of the Dealership said "NO" not good enough. He rang me and I am getting a new car. Y I P E E ! This guy is brilliant. He stated he would not be happy with anyone owning this car and it is going to VW to do whatever. The dealer happened to have another Black MY08 EOS identical to mine as they ordered 2 into Aust and he got both of them. It arrived a few days after mine did and it was not allocated to a customer so I get this one. Get this, VW Aust. informed the Manager of Dealership that there is no roof problems with the EOS. The manager showed them these posts, threads from previous people re roof etc....... but they are sticking to 'no problems.'

T H A N K Y O U to everyone who replied and sent me information. You have helped immensely. My wife will now finally get her new Black EOS and I will get my Jetta back off her. The EOS is on a transporter in next few days and will arrive in Sydney on Monday 25/02. P.S. They tried the shimms in the technical bulletin but they did not work - this was done just before the roof ceased up.

Regards.
Rowan.

Congratulations on a successful outcome. Don't tell me you prefer a Jetta to the Eos, I don't believe it.

Hi Steph,
A lot of the dealers don't like demonstrating the roof in the showroom. The battery can go flat after only a few operations.
If I show my roof off I never do it more than twice without running the engine.

Make sure when you pick it up they fully demonstrate everything for you.

My dealer did. We tried the roof. It went down but wouldn't go up again.
He took it into service & they reset the computer. Everything then worked correctly. Guess sometimes even the per-delivery check doesn't find everything.
Not had a probelm since then so waiting 10 mins extra was ok. Better than a return trip to the garage after I got home.

I will avoid letting anyone play with my roof. It is so precision, that you can stop a rattle on the left and then get a new one on the right.

Every now and again, I will watch it open and close very closely and see if anything looks strained....

No one plays with my EOS either. Nine months old & the only time she's been to the garage is to have a passenger seat switch replaced.

Well, mines now 6 months old and I have started getting noises from the roof almost overnight! Its a creaking noise that comes from the drivers side rear passenger seat area. It happens over uneven surfaces and when the DSG kicks down, or if I brake sharply.

I have put vasaline on all the catches, krytoxed everything and its still there. It still happens if the windows are down so its not them rubbing, must either be the rear window section or the bootlid frame (with the parcel shelf bit on) I think. I would imagine that the main part of the roof would be pretty solid once pushed into the windscreen and locked down. That bloody rear screen section I'm sure is also what makes the kind of sound like when a Gerbil digs away in the corner of a cage, ever time I go over a bump!

Still i'd rather put up with it than let those monkeys down the local VW dealer get their grubby little mitts on it!!!!!

Who else has got new noises then???

I am still having the same problem. First went to the dealer who 'siliconed' all rubbers. 2 weeks no sound, then it came back. Back to the dealer who then 'Krytoxed' all the rubbers. Sound was away for 4 weeks. Now its back again. i am getting a bit nervous because it seems this is a typical problem allover all Eos cars I am affraid. Always back side C pillar left side of the car.
WHO CAN HELP US?????????????????

Hi Marc,
In Australia the answer is "There is no roof problem" Even though everone is complaining and experience it "there is no problem". I have thrown it in and just put up with it, even my new EOS the one I got yesterday to replace the one in hundreds of pieces has a knocking noise - very minor compared to previously but it is there. Roof down and it is fine. Hate to say it but just put up with it. Like Simon said above - fix it and another will probably appear. I am crazy about rattles and noises in the car - the EOS is the wrong car to buy if you are like me. I just look forward to a nice day where the roof can come down and you can do what many others can't do, drop the roof and enjoy. Sorry I can't help you. You would think it would be looked at in production and quality control???? Don't let them play with the roof and start looking for problems ! Learn from others ;-)

Regards,
Rowan.

Agree totally, I'm just gonna put up with it now. I mean, my other car is a Fiat, and the other is a Renault so sweaks and rattles are just the norm for me really. What be-grudges me is how much do you have to spend to actually get good build quality? I mean, I'm sure we all feel that stumping up over £25 grand should deserve a no rattle driving experience wright? Well I went German this time with build quality in mind and to be fair it is well put together and the plastics are slightly better but is my £29300.00 Eos really worth £10 grand more that the equivilent Twintop which I nearly bought??????? Nah!!!!! dont think so. That "German" build quality is over rated and over priced I think.

I once had a drive in a friends Merc SL500 AMG, were talking WELL over £100 grand and it was still a bit plasticy, flimsy inside and there was still a squeek or two when the roof was up!!!!

Convertibles simply have too many non fixed parts, I bet they just cant build one that does eventually start to rattle, no matter how much it is, even a Bently!
