I just bought my Eos and have been reading on here about how to prevent leaky seals. The consensus is to go with Krytox, but I really havent seen weather to go with the oil or the grease.

I did wash my car and there are two leaks at the front where the A pillar/roof/driver &passenger side window meet up. Which is why I am investigating.

I have read the email that was sent to everyone who had inquired about it from the UK Source, and have heard their recommendation... but I would like to know from everyones PERSONNAL experience, what they prefer, so I know what to buy.

Also, I have talked to the VW dealer, and am going over there tomorrow for other issues, but asked them about the krytox. They said they have a seal conditioner, but I am not sure if that is the same thing.

Does anyone have a part number of the VW brand that works, incase I go that route?

Sorry.. alot of questions for one post, but this is my first nice car, and I am beginning to understand why people are so picky about their "babies":)

I suspect most if not all members of this forum are using either the VW OEM seal conditioner or DupontKrytox GPL105 liquid which they have purchased from a Dupont Chemicals distributor. I have read posts in other forums which have advised against using the grease due to tedious application and uneven distribution problems causing contamination of the window glass in particular.

The VW OEM product is considerably more expensive than the GPL105 but may be more convenient for owners in remote locations. I would expect UPS/FedEx etc would be a reliable service to Alaska for product purchased in the lower 48 states. The closest sources to you are in California as below [as shown on the Dupont dealer list]:

Miller-Stephenson Chemical Co., Inc.* CALIFORNIA

Hope this helps.

You must use the oil. The seals are not made for the grease. The only place it may be acceptable to use the grease would be on the C Segment Guides, but I even use the oil on that one!

You want the Special Lubricant part number: G 052 172 A1

The oil is specially formulated to be slightly absorbed by the seals. This is what keeps them supple and moist. Without this, they will dry and creak and start to harden and leak.

I would always use the one VW recommend.
The last thing you want is a problem they won't pay for under warranty because you did something they didn't recommend...

Hence I only use Krytox.

Try this place http://www.1stvwparts.com/. They are in Washington and have reasonable prices. I just checked and they have this item which is called a lubricant. The pt# is G 052 172 A1. It is currently $43.35 USD plus $8.95 shipping. You could check at your VW dealer. The pt# is a VW number. It is a liquid in a 30ml (approx 1 oz) bottle. There is also a G 052 172 A2 which is the same stuff, only a spray version and is bit more expensive ( about $10).

More Krytox questions

- Any URL for a WW Dupont dealer locator? I could not locate one here in France.
- I have read on Dupont's web site that they have come up with GPL104, different viscosity which they claim makes it easier to use than GPL105 Krytox... Any comments on this?
- Is the VW Forum article THE reference to follow for applying the Krytox, or anything else to worry about that is not included in the now 135 pages article and associated comments?

thanks!!!

Fred,
Here is a URL for a UK supplier: http://www.gbrtech.co.uk/
You can email Alan Follet at this company: [email protected]
You will find him very helpful.
These are their prices:
"Quote:
Krytox GPL 105 applicator bottle, 30ml £18.00/30ml bottle
Krytox GPL 205 grease, 2oz £19.00/2oz tube

Both are ex stock, and prices are ex VAT, ex works.

We accept Credit Card payment (excepting Amex and Diners), our minimum order quantity is £30.00, so we would suggest you take either x2 of the bottle, or perhaps one of each bottle + grease."

This site shows you how to apply the Krytox:

Hope this is of help.
