Lopaka,
Don't know if this link is much use to you in Hawaii but if all else fails they may be able to tell you where its available in your part of the world:
www.gbrtech.co.uk
Send an email to Alan Follett - he is very helpful. his email address:

I only joined the site yesterday and after reading the excellent write up by Pan European on Krytox i went to My local VW Dealership to buy some. I was told by the Parts manager that VW have brought out their own pack for the seals . basically they appear to be throw away wipes impregnated with the same stuff and retail for about £5 for one application. may be an alternative. Ric . :)

The product is made by Dupont and is called Krytox GPL105 in liquid form - it is also available as a grease but this is not as easy to use as the liquid.

The Dupont website does not show any Hawaian distributors however there are two in California:

Miller-Stephenson Chemical Co., Inc.* CALIFORNIA
12261 Foothill Blvd.
Sylmar, CA 91342
(818) 896-4714
Fax: (818) 896-6086
Contact: Diane Bonfert

RMI Ratermann Manufacturing Inc.
(Distributor for Oxygen, Industrial Gas,
Medical Gas,and Specialty Gas Industries)
web: www.rmiorder.com
CALIFORNIA
601 Pinnacle Place
Livermore, CA 94550
(800) 264-7793
Fax: (800) 264-7797
Contact: Brent Lockhart, Nat'l Sales Mgr.
Craig Pagano, Sales Rep

Hope these help.

Best wishes
David

Thank you all for your suggestions. I will start with the other dealer on the island (only have 2 to pick from) and try again to purchase some Krytox.

Welcome Ricky. You should have received a set of the mentioned wipes free in the boot of your car when it was delivered . To buy a bottle of Krytox from a dealer will cost double the price of buying it from gbrtech as mentioned in the post by John F (although you do have to buy 2 bottles - we usually share with someone else on the forum). Also Alan from gbr will send you info on where and how to apply the stuff - he is very helpful.
Good luck, happy EDA's

Hi Ricky, welcome to the site.

My dealer also gave me one of those packs, which I used about two months ago.

There were three pads, from memory, one was a cleaner and the other two krytox, although it may have been the other way around.

There isn't really enough to do the whole car properly, and the pads are in shreds before you finish, due to the abrasive nature of the rubber seals.

I plan to get some Krytox liquid in the next few weeks, to do the job properly.

I am also keen to try it on my old Forester, to see if it reduces the wind noise.

Hi All,
Bought some Krytox (VW Special Lubercant) this am. Again, parts department had no idea what my car model was, nor what Krytox was! I had to do the whole speech again and it was just getting old. The gentlemen helping me was reading a newspaper and it looked like I was bothering him!
He then stated do you know it is real expensive ($76 US for tiny bottle?).
I got go loud and said I knew it was expensive, but where else was I suppose to get it? The price dropped to $67 US. I'm ready to call VW of America at this point.

Lopaka, here in Colorado, I found VW krytox at the dealer for $72, but passed on the purchase. A few months later I talked to them again about it and they said they sent it all back because it was too expensive. Then I was told that VW dropped the price to $52. I still haven't bought any, but when I was in the dealership last week, they gave me the three wipe package free. They didn't know if it would be available for sale or how much it would cost if it was available. Steve

Krytox Done!

Aloha All,
Finally had some sun today and the good news is I finally got to Krytox my roof and what a difference! No creaking, and the wind noise is gone! Wiswh the dealer had done this instead of removing a shim from the roof! It was a lengthy process, and I bet the dealer just does not want to be bothered by the whole thing.
The bad news is that my i-pod connection to the stereo has gone dead! I reset my i-pod as the car manual said, no go. I borrowed my naighbors i-pod, no go! I docked it in my home unit and the i-pod works fine. Another trip to the dealer in my future!
Again, has anyone had this problem, and how did you get it corrected?
Please help, I would like to avoid the dealer.

Thanks,
Lopaka:D

Sorry Lopaka but think you will find its a trip to the dealer. The same happened to me last year. Did all that you did but no go. Took it to the dealer and they said it needed new iPod connection - no problem - no cost - and was done in a couple of hours. All working ok ever since.
Good luck. Gary

I don't have the link handy on "where" to put it but I'm sure someone else can put up the link on how to apply. Keep the seals supple and avoid creeks and leaks.

The price from Harrisons in Australia has jumped to $90 per bottle, with a minimum 2 bottle order. I plan to use it on the Forester and the Territory also, so it probably isn't too bad.

Ouch........the price hike is most likely the result of the Aussie Dollar losing value against the greenback in recent months.

The USA is the home of the current global financial crisis yet we are paying the price. I expectedthe USD would have "gone down the gurgle" big time as a consequence. Perhaps the Chinese Government is supporting the USD on world exchange markets with their huge USD cash reserves to protect their US bond holdings which would otherwise become worthless.
