I know this has been discussed before, but I am having trouble finding the information I want. I stopped in at the VW dealer on Thursday and inquired about "krytox" and, of course, they have never heard of it. So I expained what it was for and the parts man went back to the PDI man and found out what it was, looked it up by part number and found that they do indeed have a bottle on hand and would gladly part with it for only $71 per bottle. Now, I'm not talking about a d gallon or even a quart, this was for a one or two ounce bottle! So, if it was a two ounce bottle, then that would compute out to a mere $4544 per gallon.

So, my question is this, is the VW lubricant special or is it "special" because it has a VW part number? Is there a genaric lubricant, such as krytox, that will do the same job? Thanks for all your help. Steve

This is a special product that is made by another company and resold by VW. Because this stuff is the "industry standard" for lubricating seals that can't be contaminated by heavy chemicals-- along with the fact that the manufacturer has a billion patents on it-- it doesn't come cheap.

It is totally non-reactive. It is approved for use in food-based environments on equipment that handles foods. It doesn't alter the components of the rubber in any way, or so they say.

If you use things like silicone products, eventually, they break down the material in the seals-- since the Eos depends so much on those seal to keep you dry, I wouldn't be willing to risk my baby with anything other than the VW branded krytox. I must admit that the "direct from manufacturer" version of krytox (i believer is is model #105) is tempting as they are a bit cheaper.

I'm using the VW stuff, have applied three times and still have a 1/3 of a bottle left. It does go a long way. Been just under 7 months with the car. No leaks, no rattles, no worries at all.

I strongly recommend the VW stuff as it just works and is easy to apply. You can use your fingers-- the stuff is totally nontoxic-- or you can use throw-away foam brushes.

There are some great threads showing where to apply the stuff... I won't get into that here. :)

Good luck. It is the best $71 investment you can make for maintenance of your car. No doubt about it. This stuff is right up there with the fanciest waxes and polishes.

All sources no matter what the label all contain the same stuff from Dupont. They hold the patent.

Shorenuf has a point ........... your dealer has not lowered his price to reflect VW's price reduction. He should do it for you ... you should insist on it! Everybody realizes it is expensive, but it works and one bottle lasts for quite some time.
