Anyone (UK I guess) gone for a maintenance plan ? Looks like the price for 3 years is about the same a 3 services, but I guess you'd save because the service price would go up over the 3 years.

Yep I went for the maintenance plan, but I did not go for the tyre option.

I went for the maintenance option with tyres as the tyres as I have 18" wheels and last time when I had a tyre on my R32 replaced it was over £200. At least this way you can budget and not have any unexpected suprises such as a clutch etc.
Maintenance seems like a no brainer if you are going to use the car for work every day and do average or above mileage.

I won't be commuting in mine (work in London), so tyre option probably wouldn't be worth it. As noted, VW Assist sounds useful.

I talked to my dealer about this when I went to collect. He said he thought it had to be taken out at the time of purchase, however, just ask your dealer !

In my case (not very high mileage), I think it wouldn't have been worth it, so I didn't take out a contract.
