I have researched this car to death and have taken it for a test drive.

I love this car.

I am ready to take the plunge BUT and its a big BUT, I can't believe the in-dash navigation is not available even as an option in Canada. What's up with that? I realize the in dash system is pretty much last generation (ie. it sucks ass) but if I'm going to shell out nearly 50K for a car (after taxes) then I shouldn't have to resort to sticking a cheezy TomTom to my windshield.

I e-mailed volkswagen about this over a month ago...no response. Did someone say "customer service"?

Any news if it will be offered on the 2009 model or for that matter when the 2009s will be coming out?

My guess is that the 09 hits the US in late August or early September and will probably hit Canada about the same time. I know from other Eos owner's from Canada that your options list is real short. For 09 Ours will be almost as short as yours. There will be new radios and nav units coming to the US and only two trim levels. If history is any indication you will not get nav. On another forum there are people who work at dealers that can help with US info but unfortuately none from Canada. If nav is a requirement why not get an indash aftermarket unit such as a Kenwood or Pioneer. I wouldn't let not having the Nav you want keep you from buying the car if you really want it.

There seem to be quite a few VW Series MFD2 Head Units showing up for sale on Ebay lately.

I had assumed that people were replacing MFD2 with aftermarket in-dash head units or with the new VW MFD3 Head Unit that has the built in hard drive, causing the old units to show up on ebay. You might see if the VW dealer will do that for you and if so how much they would charge.

Anyway = there are some great aftermarket head units with GPS Nav and DVD Playing capabilities out there for less money than VW asks for the OEM MFD3 option. There are even CAN-BUS adapter kits to keep the use of your steering wheel controls with certain aftermarket head units.

You might go ahead and buy your Eos with the basic 6 CD + radio head unit and then upgrade yourself with one of those..

Here is how I solved the need for GPS navigation on my Eos - I wanted a unit that was easily replaceable and upgradable as the GPS technology is improving so quickly and I plan to own my Eos a long time.

The only thing seen when not using the GPS is a little black disc provided by Garmin with the GPS on the top of the dash! You can barely see it in the 1st photo which is what my Eos looks like with GPS stowed in the glove box.

The second photo shows EoS with GPS suction mounted on to the disc on the top of the dash. This is a Garmin C530 StreetPilot model I purchased in March, 2007 for $250. I believe that Garmin has already discontinued but sells a replacement model of the same shape and price but with more features and a little bigger screen.

Hi,

I upgraded my MFD2 to the MFD3 (RNS510). It's a great bit of kit. My understanding is that the unit is fitted in EOS's built in 08 onwards. I think the problem was that the NAVTEQ maps were not available for the US and Canada, but I guess they may be now.

This link give you plenty of info about this unit :-
