I have attached a picture, and what i refer to is the over sized black plastic plate (the thing the number plate is attached to) that is attached to the "chrome" part at the front of the car. The dealer and service centre could not be more unhelpful if they tried. I have some new smaller narrow plates that i wish to attach, however i wish to dismount and get rid of that ugly black plastic plate first, otherwise it defeats the purpose of getting smaller number plates.

I v had a good look under the bonnet and in the grille to see if i could get behind to remove it, but to no avail. PLEASE HELP.... has anybody removed this plate? Or do other eos owners have the same problem? or do your number plates attach straight onto the "chrome"?

Hello Adam!
Personally I wouldn't bother.
Although it would be nice to have a nice clean chrome section, that is not going to happen as the rego plate is mandatory.
Removing the black mounting plate will leave 4 holes in the chrome
and mounting the rego plate directly onto the chrome will result in scratches and wear points over time.
Still, I guess the 4 holes could be plugged with something that would not be too easily seen.
I have attached a photo of what a slim plate would look like.

Yes it can be removed (expander clips) but it leaves four 10mm holes in the chrome part. Some USA cars don't have this on and the chrome section is replaceable so you should be able two get one.

Look at ebay number 140243091369 that will show you what a grill looks like without the number plate fixing.

Looking at your photo the custom plate actually doesnt look too bad, even with the black plastic. The annoying thing is that if I were to register my car in VIC or NSW, they offer full size (European) plates that would fit those holes left in the chorme. In SA we are limited to a fixed width of 37mm :(

Do you have the standard or slim size for the rear? Just wondering is the slim would fit the existing holes in the rear.

I have the slim plates on the cars' rear.
Only the top screw holes have been used and they are in the same position for both the standard and slim plates (as is the front).

ugly black thing on the beautiful chrome grille

Hi Guys. I am about to take delivery of a brand new black FSI with Corn Silk interior. I would really like to get rid of the black section on the front of the car where the number plate attaches. Now i have read what someone has said about having to have a rego plate, duuuu....i know cars need these but i think what someone else asked and myself now is " where would one find a grille section without that ugly black strip on it????" I intend to mount my rego plate below the crome. Not on top of it. The Ebay number supplied by one of the members is no longer attached to an active item on ebay. Anyone got any ideas as to where i might find a all chrome grille that i can replace my EOM grille with???? Please please please. I think its a dam shame they ruined that grille putting the black strip there. The Eos has so much more when its all chrome. Checkout http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=3826422&page=2
Here you will, if you have not seen...some fantastic pics of our beloved machine in it's, what i call " meant to be state". roll down the bottom of the page and see one fantastic looking black eos with....yes...rego plate moved down below the chrome section. O and its still legal by the way....please just don't speed....don't want to get the rule book pulled out on ya... I think we heard enough about what the law says...now can someone just tell me where to find the grille please.:D

I'm in Washington State and we have a few outlaws up here that refuse to "plate" the front bumper.

As I understand the situation, the dealers are the ones that put the front license plate holder on the vehicle. When I saw the Eos for the first time at the Seattle Auto Show in '07, the car didn't have a plate holder. The salesman at the show told me all the cars come in that way without a license holder on the front bumper and its up to the customer to ask for one. So, no drilled holes either.

However, the dealer I bought from installed the front holder on all their cars. It appears to me that if you want to join the outlaw (no front license plate) club, your chances of getting busted are almost zero as long as you don't get caught speeding. That's about the only time a policeman will see both your front bumper and your rear bumper.

I guess most of the "no plate in front" crowd are betting that they won't be caught and from what I see on our highways, that seems like a good bet.

I think the comments in this thread are irelevant for the UK and I would feel it is common sense, but you will be picked up in the UK if you are caught with no front number plate, it will only be a matter of time

More so now as the new ANPR (Automatic number plate recognition) is comming more and more into force, a police on board camera, or one of the vans parked at the side of the road (with big cameras pointing out of the back watching your approach) will immediately notice a missing plate.

For those of our colleagues over seas, ANPR is connected to the DVLA registration base and carried now in most partol cars, it automatcially reads your number plate, the police do not have to type anything in at all within minutes they can see if your vehicle is road taxed and insured. They do not have to do anything they merely patrol and just drive round, when the system detects a dodgy car a warning sound advises them, if you are stopped at the side of the road and you cannot there an then prove insurance or tax, the car is impounded. You have "x" days to produce the documents to the police otherwise the car is crushed.

I think the ANPR system is fantastic - it has my full support. It's frightening how many uninsured cars there are on the roads - being funded by those that pay top dollar to cover the shortfall.

If you play by the rules you have nothing to fear.

They don't live in a Police state - yet!

The NSW Police are also using this system with a very high strike rate for unregistered vehicles and also for stolen vehicles - two benefits for the price of one :D .

Anyone know of the ramifications of mounting the number plate to the lower grille aerodynamically. What effect will it have on the cooling system for example, especially in the warmer parts of the world [like Adelaide]? Just a thought.

If you live in Pennsylvania like I do or some other states like Delaware, a front plate is not required. The black p[late patch really is ugly if not required and toatally disrupts the lines of the front. Anyone find front chrome plugs to nicely cover the holes ?

Mikerr I also am thinking about plugging my plate holes ... NJ registered car but am gonna do a custom plate mount. Was thinking about doing a badge-less grill but they seem to have a molded euro plate on them. I was thinking a custom euro plate if I did that. Still unsure though but if I keep my current grill I might paint it black and black plugs should be easy to find though it appears that my dealer drilled into the chrome for my plate screws too so I have six holes.

Simple solution...just go and buy chrome tape and fill in all around behind the plate. Covering up the black sections with the tape. Might be a simple and inexpensive fix - even if for just a short period of time until you find a more attractive solution.
