I was driving back to Dartmouth this afternoon from Exeter via the ferry. When I started the engine to get off the ferry I was horrified to find that the oil pressure light stayed on. I must admit that I had not checked the oil level since I bought the car mid December & have now done 2250 miles. As soon as I got off the ferry I checked the oil level only to find the level right at the bottom of the dipstick. I drove slowly to the nearest garage - about 1 mile away - & consulted the handbook about which oil should be used. This stated that only oil to spec VW 507 should be used.
The garage did not have any oil to this spec so I purchased 1 litre of Castrol Magnatec for diesel engines (spec VW 505) instead. The viscocity grade is 10W-40.
Can anyone confirm whether this oil is suitable or should I seek an oil change PDQ?
For the last 15 years I have not had to check my oil between services (only had petrol engines - Ford & Toyota). Is this the norm for VW TDI engines or Have I got a potential problem?

Well, oil consumption at tdi's are known but 2250 miles are not much. Usually check at 3000 miles.

That oil 505 is not correct one. Be carefully with oils as they are very important in tdi's, also if you have particules filter (PDF).

Buy an oil with VW507.00 norm and change it.

if you only bought your car in december and cover so little in miles i would start to wonder if your dealer did a proper inspection on your car before releasing it to you . i have a tdi got mine in may 2008 and now with 11500 miles on the clock ive never had to put any oil in . bet that will change tho when it goes in for its service next week. ive been told by local vw dealer first service will be £150 can anyone tell me if this sounds right

John f you need a 0w30 or a 5w30 oil for tdi engines. Castrol edge is what i use. oil 10w40 is not the right oil but will mix with what you have in the car. if it still uses that much take it back to the dealer and say how much you put in and what mileage. I check my oil weekly on a sunday after washing it

My excessive oil consumption turned out to be a serious oil leak.
As my car lives outside on the road at night I usually park in a different place so did not notice the leak until parking in a friend's (brand new) drive for a night.
Went to the nearest dealer who advised that the camshaft cover gasket had failed & oil had contaminated the camshaft drive belt & the alternator belt. The dealer had the car for 3 days.
I did advise the dealer of the oil that I added & he didn't seem to think any damage would be done as it was only a litre. Have purchased 1 litre of the recommended grade which I will keep in the boot. So far - & I've done a further 2500 miles - I have not had to add any more but I do check every week now.

From my experience the VW group diesel engines will generally use about 1ltr in the first 10,000 ish miles, when they have settled down you would be unlucky if youhave to put any in between services. I have 6000 on mine now and I had to put about 0.75cl in two weeks ago.

I had a litre lying round from when I had my Leon TDi so used that, even though the Leon was new last February and traded for the Eos in October, so the oil was not that old I was told it was the wrong oil, I should have been using "long life" the small amount would not have been any trouble, but I do have the right stuff now (obviously more expensive)

Keep 1l of oil next to your spare wheel.

VW507.00 5W30 oil is the correct one. Indeed Castrol Edge works fine and ages well. You'll find that a 1liter bottle fits perfectly below the boot carpet, next to the spare wheel :)
