One mirror not folding in

I have a VAG scan tool on order (not VCDS I know, but equivalent most of the time).
It is unlikely to be much help diagnosing roof faults or adaptation. Most of the cheap tools just spit out fault code numbers on the basic items. The folding mirrors use a small dc motor for folding, a second motor for the mirror angle adjust and there's wiring for the orange led turn signals. Quite a lot of parts and wiring inside with connectors which link up with the door control module. The window regulator is not connected with the folding mirrors.

I had one of those once. It hadn't got all the label files for my engine version, bricked itself if it got connected to the internet, bombed out on autoscans and I never trusted it for adaptation re-coding.. :):)

Sarah k8: This thread relates to those with an EOS that has power folding mirrors, does your EOS have power folding mirrors? It sounds like your door cards will need to be removed by the garage to go further with your fault, but they should do a diagnostics scan first.

Both aku and myself have learned a lot about powerfold mirrors. The last few posts could describe 2 different scenarios. aku had his powerfolds sieze up. The door controller units control the powerfolds and have built in over current protection which normally cuts in to stop a mirror in its fully open or closed position. If a mirror pivot is stiff or seized, the controller thinks it's reached the end and it will stop part way without getting there this is more likely to show as a fault on one mirror, not on both.

The powerfold mirrors are linked to each front door control module. They are also responsible for windows and locking. If there's a problem with door locking I'd suggest powerfolds not working is just secondary because lock and unlock must work to inform the powerfolds when to open and fold? A diagnostics scan should flag any faults with the door controller or water may have got inside their connectors and they need to be inspected (door cards removed). I can't see a situation where a faulty powerfold would stop locking but I don't know what happens in the controller if a powerfold motor was a short circuit?

To go further, the door cards should be removed and the powerfold mirror disconnected. Then test the locks. If the locking fault remains, it's not due to the mirror but the door controller or its connections. The powerfold mirror may have some internal wiring or short circuits?

It depends on what functionality the mirrors have: If they are basic mirrors with glass position control and heaters they have the same each side. Powerfold mirrors have 2 wires (and pins) connected to pins 14 & 15. Some mirrors have optional glass darkening only on the drivers mirror and they will have 2 extra wires compared to the passenger side. Whatever different mirror funtions are present, both sides use the same connector, but some pins and wires will be missing. Door controllers are matched in software and printed circuit layout to the type of mirrors fitted.
