I frequently have trouble opening my trunk. It locks back up on me before I can open it. I hold the remote down on the trunk symbol until I hear a click and it pops up slightly. Anyone else having trouble?

Sounds like a problem

Mine pops and goes up a little bit and does not get pulled back down. Sounds like something is a little out of adjustment

I am inclined to agree with evolvingpowercat in this one.....

There is a sensor which detects when you close the boot..... If the boot lid doesn't come up enough on opening, then sensor may think it is closed and re-lock the securing bolts on the sides...

The only part of the boot mechanism I know well is the bit related to the roof... When I am looking at my rattle again today, I will take a closer look at the luggage compartment opening mechanism and see what I can see!

This is a problem that I am having as well. I unlock the boot from the drivers door and walk back to open it and it is locked again. At first I thought it was because I closed the drivers door, but now it does it weather the door is closed or not. The sensor in the trunk sounds like the culprit.

It is... I have looked at the design and I don't think there is much of a way round it.... It seems to have a timer of a couple of seconds before closing again..... I can only guess that the button is there for you to open so someone else can lift, because by the time you push the button and then go to the back, it is locked again!

Odd though it may be, it seems like it is by design! Very odd!

Must be a feature then. Its just crap engineering, mine does the same, in fact the remote release from the drivers door is a waste of time. Its easier to use the fob.

Yep, I have the same problem. Even with the remote it locks up within a couple of seconds. Just started happening about a month ago. Before, I could hold the remote or press the trunk release in the car and have time to walk to the back and open the trunk. Seems like a sensor problem. I take my car in for its 16,000 KM service this Wednesday so I will have them take a look at it. It truly is annoying!

Did you add a spoiler or do something else that would increase the weight of your trunk lid? If so that could be causing your issue. There are two spring loaded bumpers on either side of the trunk lid latch that appear to lift the lid away from the latch just enough to keep it from re-latching the lid by itself. It takes very little hand pressure pushing down on the lid to compress those two bumpers to engage the latch, so adding weight to the trunk lid could compromise VW's design.

I used my drivers door button to open the trunk to see if I could cause the same issue you have. I timed it after pushing the release button for 1 minute and it still did not go down by itself. Even after one minute I could lift it without any problem. Tried it again but did not lift and found that I could to push down slightly on the trunk until I heard a click and then the motor pulled it down tight. So, there does not seem to be any timer involved at least on my US 2007 EOS.

When I release my trunk it 'pops' then after a half second or so you hear a motor run for a second or two, I think that puts the latch in the 'up' position. My EOS has two spring loaded black rubber bumpers on the trunk lid on either side of the latch, these seem to be what pushes the lid up above the level where it will re-latch by itself. Pushing down compresses the bumpers and causes it to latch.

You might check to see if those black rubber bumpers move freely and that they are not stuck in the compressed position.

Evolvingpowercat, you are correct it seems that the rubber spring loaded bumpers are the problem. They seem to get stuck in the compressed position. A quick squirt with WD40 and a little exercise did the trick.

Well spotted.

I was having exactly the same problem a year ago and it took ages for the Dealer to fix. What was happening was simply that opening/closing the driver's door (after popping the bootlid) caused enough of a vacuum or even a movement for the bootlid, which was resting at the top of its auto-close position, to get pulled down again. It was just a matter of adjustment and it stopped completely. However - it started to do it again just last week! Will see if it's got itself out of adjustment again shortly.

Hi, I have a different trunk problem for two weeks. The car is still at the technical service. The problem is at the right hook underneath the trunk cover which holds it. It does not return to its totally open position unlike the left one..

They made some adjustments but it did not work, so they tried to change the left vacuum pumper mechanism and we are waiting for that part from VW Germany for a replacement.

Anybody heard or had this type of problem ?

Took my car in for its 16,000 KM service and I pointed out the problem I was having opening the trunk. They said it was operating to spec. This is after they had it in the shop for 2-3 hours. (Our weather has been around 0 to 5C lately so I suspect the colder weather causes the problem in my case).

What they wrote on my invoice said:

"Trunk design on Eos is designed to pop trunk open no just actuating a micro switch. If trunk has weight on it or weather is cold and trunk is stiff, trunk may not pop high enough and re-latch."

Oops take it back, the WD40 did not do the trick after all. Back to square one, the lid still locks again before you can reach it. It worked once or twice but its back the same.

Mine had same problem when i first got it but seemed to wear off but now its back again?.

When first got car I was showing my brother in law around and popped the trunk and he tried to lift the lid from under the lip not the badge as we owners know just then the lid started to seal:eek:

Never seen hands move so fast in all my life.. lucky though!

Would be nice if the boot auto opened like on a passat

note for Andrew

Andrew,
Might be a good idea to move this thread to the technical section rather than regional sections.

I just got my Eos last week and have not had any trunk problems as if yet. Re above, the manual on page 34 (US edition booklet 3.1) says the doors/trunk relock after 30 seconds. It's suppose to be a safety feature.

If the above is correct AND you're not getting your full 30 seconds, it sounds like it may be a timer problem.
