Must be a feature then. Its just crap engineering, mine does the same, in fact the remote release from the drivers door is a waste of time. Its easier to use the fob.
Opening the Trunk
I frequently have trouble opening my trunk. It locks back up on me before I can open it. I hold the remote down on the trunk symbol until I hear a click and it pops up slightly. Anyone else having trouble?

Evolvingpowercat, you are correct it seems that the rubber spring loaded bumpers are the problem. They seem to get stuck in the compressed position. A quick squirt with WD40 and a little exercise did the trick.

Oops take it back, the WD40 did not do the trick after all. Back to square one, the lid still locks again before you can reach it. It worked once or twice but its back the same.
