Hi, everybody

Does someone know if you need to start the engine in order to operate the roof ?
Or could it be done with the engine off.

Thank you for your quick and accurate answer.

It will work fine without the engine running. However, don't know how many times you could do it until the battery runs flat...

My dealer made a point that it is likely to run the battery dead if operating the top without the engine running. I suppose it could be done once in a quick jam; however, I would not make a habbit out of it!

Ditto .......... received same caution from my dealer!

The roof modules that people use to open their tops with the "remote" are doing this with the car off. I doubt that the process will drain a battery, however, I wouldn't be putting it up and down repeatedly with the engine off.

That is mostly speculation since I don't actually have a mod installed in my Eos.

I have operated the roof while the engine is not running on several separate occasions. Mostly when parked in my garage and I'm preparing for a drive.

I do not want to start the car just to operate the roof, especially in the closed garage.

So far no problems, and I hope not to have any.

Thank you, your reply is the most interesting one, as you have already done it, several times without any battery problems. So, I'm confident and I'll just do it like you.

I second that. In fact I cant recall the last time I had the engine running when operating the roof - I was just cautioned not to open and close it repeatedly.

Any Eos on display in a dealership is subject to people demonstrating (playing with!) the roof all day long without the engine running. The dealer will probably tell you how many times they managed to do it before the battery ran flat..

Yeah my Astra's roof operates from the key remotely and i've never experienced the battery running flat. I almost always do this as I can lower the roof as I walk upto the car so its ready to drive straight off with the roof down, and visa versa when I lock it. Even though this is a traditional fabric roof the amount of motors and hydraulic parts to operate it cant be that different and to be fair, after 10 mins of driving the battery's probably fully charges again anyway.

When I was leaving the dealership the salesman cautioned that I should not operate the roof more than three or four times without running the engine for half an hour. He said that new owners were tempted to demonstrate it to friends, relatives, neighbours, the village cat etc when flushed with pride and novelty. As it was December in Bradford and the middle of a week of sleety drizzle, I managed to curb my enthusiasm anyway. However, since then I have operated it on occasions at least twice without running the engine and have noticed no fall-off in sped of operation during the second cycle.

Actually, if a dealer lets a battery run flat, they have to replace the battery before selling the car (at least, that's the case with VW dealerships in Canada).

When you walk into a VW dealership here, you can see the battery charger leads running into the cars. Especially cars that get lots of "power hungry" demonstrations-- like the Eos with the top movement.

Basically, they never let the battery run the roof alone because a battery is never the same once it has been run flat.

My experience with roof operation

I am a newbie owner and have been showing the roof operation as suppose all new owners do. The USA Eos has a HUGE battery under the hood, as big as most large USA SUVs. I have operated the roof 4 or 5 times with engine off without any trouble starting and driving the car afterward. That said, I know that is a risk and will be trying not to run the top more than 2 times between running the engine going forward.

Hi Tres,

There are several threads on this forum about a module that allows you to do non-standard things with the roof, such as controlling it remotely or raising / lowering when on the move.

However, you will also see that VW very much frown upon anybody making any changes to the roof and I think you will find that almost all those who looked into it, did not go ahead for fear of invalidating their warrantee.
