Hi everyone,
I have decided to spend some of the kids' inheritance & am awaiting delivery in 2-3 weeks time of a new Eos (2.0 TDI Sport DSG in reflex silver). I am trading in a '03 Toyota Avensis which, although a boring car, has been very reliable.
In the VW family, I have previously owned, amongst other models, a Beetle Karmann Kabriolet (1955 vintage) & suffered not a single roof leak, despite the outer skin being in tatters. I am concerned to find, having just discovered this site, that there may be troubles with leaking roof seals on the Eos.
I had previously been looking at a Ford Focus CC but was put off by the number of comments I had heard about their roof seals leaking (with no apparent cure & very hostile comments regarding Ford's reaction to these leaks).
Having put down my deposit, however, I'm now committed. I have noted some of the comments on practical ways to overcome these leaks which appear to involve lubricating the seals every so often. As my car car will not be garaged initially & as we are now approaching the worst of winter, how frequently should this operation be carried out? Should I drop the top at regular intervals to keep the seals flexible? Any advice would be appreciated.
The car will be delivered with the standard 310 stereo system whereas I would have preferred the full satnav system. I have been advised that this cannot be changed by a VW dealer although it has been suggested by the dealer that I upgrade to a Pioneer AVIC 900BT unit which is cheaper than VW's satnav system & is "all singing/all dancing." If anyone has any experience of this system then I would appreciate their comments.
I am still very much looking forward to taking delivery of my Eos, hopefully before Christmas.
Kind regards,
John.

Don't worry about leaks - they really are less of a problem than they appear. Most people have little or no trouble at all. Lubricating the seals takes less than an hour, and only really needs to be done 3-4 times a year.

Anyway - welcome to the board - you've picked the right car for sure.

Hey welcome to the site!!! I also have a 2.0 TDI but manual its brilliant. Not had any problems so far with my roof so i think they must of sorted out the seals for the 07-08 plate eos's

With the weather at the moment I dont know what to do with my roof if i put it down it might rip the seals because of the ice and if i dont im scared that the roof will freeze up.

Im sure if you have any problems with your roof VW will sort it out they have done for me even if my car is making what i think is an odd noise they will pick him up and have a look and drop him back freshly washed for free!
also someone put 2 dents in my car dropped it into vw and got it done free!

cant say fairer than that!

Nail-z-gull & Steph,

Many thanks for your reassuring postings.

Steph - How do you do it? - Who's your dealer????

Incidentally, I'm buying my Eos on the web & although I live in Devon I will have to go to a dealer in Sussex to collect the car who will be taking my Avensis in part exchange. At the moment, I don't know where I will take the car for servicing. There is a dealer in Exeter, one in Plymouth & one in Newton Abbott. The dealer in Exeter looks too flash & expensive (part of Inchcape). They wanted to charge about £4k more than I'm currently paying to buy a similar car. I will probably cultivate the dealer in Newton Abbott as they are quite small & seem to have very good ratings. Hope I can get similar treatment to you, Steph!
Kind regards,
John.

We had a leak on an 08, but was not because of the convertable roof. It was the way the pasanger window met up with the seal. VW sent a new seal, that did not correct it, so they gave us a new 09. Can't go wrong with a VW. They will take care of thier problems if they have any. I will be a VW owner for life. I have never had Ford, GM, Chrysler treat thier problems even close to the way VW did. We love our EOS, and loved the one before it, even with the leak :)

No Leaks

I purchased my EOS May of 2008. The only time i have had leaking, was when I went through a power car-wash, and it forced a little dripping to happen.

Also, I just mentioned to the dealer when i had it services to check the seals, and they lubricated them and checked for leaks all free.

I was told about the upgrade too, and that the VW model if pricey to integrate into more security systems that I also want (proximity alarm). So, I am saving up for the whole package of a Radio/Media Nav system. I will let you know, cause my intentions was to purchase this right after Christmas.

Hi Steph,

Looking back at previous threads I can see that you had a few problems to start with but glad to hear that everything was resolved to your satisfaction. I have to say that in the 4 years that I have had my Avensis I have found the dealers very helpful & I hope that I find the same with VW.

Kind regards,
John.

Hi, John

I find so far that VW treat you well if you have your car in for something they will wash it for you. They also do a collection and drop service so if you can't drop the car off yourself they get someone to come and collect it for you and bring it back when they are finished.

As advised on your other thread re delivery times, I took mine 4 maybe 5 weeks ago and I have not had any leaks, nor seen any sign of "weeping". In my work I work closely with the GM group and I can say that they also have similar comments from customers with their twin top.

I think you must be realistic, if there is heavy water or snow sitting on the seal then you may experience some seepage. Though I do hasten to add (before everyone jumps on me for being negative) that in all the bad weather we have had of late I can say we have not experienced that with ours 2009 model.

Re retro fit sat nav's etc, another to look at would be the Zenec range, specially shaped to fit the golf 5 chassis, they are bringing a new combined unit out later this month, possibly rolling into January, model 2010. There are threads on this site under 3rd party fits etc.

As someone who has just rejected an Eos because of leaks, I would just like to give a word of caution.

I don't wish to be completely negative, and I'm sure, the vast majority of Eos's don't leak; but it has to be accepted that there are those that do. Mine was one of them, which first showed itself in the first week. The dealer attempted to fix the leaks four times with no success. It seems that if you have one that leaks, they are not easy to correct without basically putting a new roof on.

Keeping the seals lubricated obviously will help the leaks that are caused by mishapen or trapped seals, but that is not the only cause of leakage.

Don't think that if you have a leak, it will be guaranteed to be cured by lubrication.

My advice to you is, thoroughly hose test the car as soon as you can, but don't use a pressure washer, make it a fair test. Any sign of leakage, and inform the dealership straight away and try and get it sorted.

Of course, some people are prepared to accept that a car of this type will leak, but I just could not. A leak due to a nipped seal, fine; a leak due to manufacturing defect, or something else, no way.

I sincerely hope you enjoy your Eos as much as I did in between all the hassle. I was one of the unlucky ones, but don't accept leakage as a 'characteristic of the car'

Lordy,
Many thanks for your advice. I will certainly follow it & give the car a good soaking as soon as I get it.

John - I used to own a Focus CC3 and it leaked like a tap! Hence why I now have a superior vehicle!!! :D

I've been nothing but happy with my Eos really. I've had one drop come through the roof but that doesn't bother me as it was when I was washing my car rather than just the usual weather. I've had a small smattering of snow on the car, as well as a lot of frost recently which has not effected my car in any way shape or form.

The only redeeming point about the Focus was the speed at which it cleared it's windsreen!

Please don't let the bad reports on the Eos put you off, it is a fantastic ride and I can speak from experience when I say that it is DEFINITELY better than the Focus CC3 (and the Ford Customer Relations Centre who dealt with the leaky complaints extremely badly!)

Doolallygirl,
Many thanks for your words of encouragement. I am not put off by the odd comments on leaks in the Eos as I'm sure the advantages of owning & enjoying the car far outnumber any minor faults, so long as they are minor!
I was, at one time, looking for a Focus CC but was very put off by the number of customers who complained about leaks. What was worse was the derogatory comments about Ford's attitude to these leaks - that really put me off for good.Your comments certainly seem to bear this out. :(
I'm now really looking forward to collecting my car in the near future. :)
Kind regards,
John.
