Evening all,

I'm looking into getting an EOS or maybe a 1 series convertible.

Reading the user reviews on What Car and the EOS gets a slating even from recent owners regarding water leaks.

There is also mention on there of a new roof seal, which supposedly helps.

However some of the comments regarding leaks are very recent.

So 2 questions...

1. How bad are the water leaks, is it a common issue?
2. Was there a roof seal redesign, and if so when was it done?

Comments are here:

Thanks alot,

Greg

Some poeple have had no leaks at all. Some have had minor leaks which they have repaired and some have not. There are still those who have had major leaks and no cure. The header seal was changed between the 07 and 08 model years. Personally, no leaks so far. We will have had our car 2 years on the 7th.

Thanks, is there a way to visually check what header seal a second hand car has fitted? Or do you know the build date from when the new header was installed?

Interestinlgy enough it is still What Car best cab - think it was the August 2008 edition that pitched it against the Volvo, BMW and Audi and it comes up best - trouble is I think readers reviews can be dangerous as people generally only leave negative feed back. It is true in the early days there were problems with leaks but most new model cabs do I think. I get on very well with my local vw dealer and they confirm that there are much much fewer ones coming with leaks now

Mine's approaching 2 years old now, and only once did I have a minor leak. That was because I hadn't lubed the seals in 6 months, and the rubber alongside the sunroof had become slightly pinched when I put the roof back up.

A simple application of Krytox sorted it out.

Hi, i'm with Neil on this one, people only do tend to leave negative comments so i'd take some of the What Car? reader reviews with a pinch of salt. I think their car reviews are good however, so as it won best cabrio enough said. I had a small leak coming from the top of the drivers side a-pillar. The car went in to get Krytoxed and get checked and had the windows adjusted which seems to have done the trick. It's a lovely car, with a quality feel, a fairly powerful and flexible engine (i have the 2.0t) and a great roof. Just about anyone i know thinks it's a great car too.

Can't be of much help with those questions. The seal was changed for the 08 model and may have found its way onto the 07s at the end of the run. It is the seal used to replace all the earlier ones when replacement is needed. A while ago I asked my dealer about it and supposedly the part numbers are the same. Unless there is a color difference or or change in shape that you can see, I don't know if you can know if it has been changed. I know the top of the windshield pop up screen was changed for 08 to silver from black and the only visual change I can think of.

We have a 2008 that we picked up in Late June 2008. The leaks we have are around the rear side windows where the junction of the front top lid and the rear lid join. There are also leaks were the window meets the A pillar (front side of top lid). One time leak into the overhead cabin light area where the red led light is located. The seals have been well lubricated by myself and the dealer twice. The dealer is now replacing the main seal. We will see if this corrects to issue. If not VW is treating me very well. No complaints. They have a vehicle replacement waiting for delivery if leak is not corrected this time. I would not desire any other vehicle than the EOS at this time. If VW continues this kind of support, I will be a life time buyer.

hmm, so still issues with 2008 cars, I guess I'm down to either an EOS or a 3 series convertible, if I go the EOS route the dealer will need to submit the car to a water test before I accept it!

First off to try the kids in the back test over half term!

Greg

I have had my white Eos since February and have just gone through an Australian winter. Not a single drop have I seen come from any of the seals and I have been looking. Fuel economy is outstanding as I am consistently getting around 5.0 l/100kms with a smooth driving style. Only one issue to complain about and that is I have discovered some damage that was poorly repaired on the bottom sill of the lower left hand side which becomes very obvious when the vehicle gets grubby. I have presented this to VW here and am awaiting a reply. I think they are trying to find someone to point the finger at. May have happened in transit possibly Photographs were taken by there staff so shall wait and see. I have driven the BMW 1 series and I think the Eos is a far more enjoyable car to drive, better looking and more refined. In my opinion...............Go for the Eos and you wont look back:) !!!

NO leaks in just under a year. I do keep the car garaged when not in use, but I've driven it in some heavy rain without ANY leaks.

Because of various reports here and elsewhere about leaks, I think it's a good idea to keep an Eos in a garage when not in use. Also, absolutely NO car washes with high pressure.

I plan to keep mine for a LONG TIME. Great gas mileage (32MPG and if I get stuck in city traffic, I get 28MPG.)

Of course, the above mileage is figured using the US gallon and NOT the Imperial gallon.

Well after looking at the 3 series and the EOS, a deal was struck today for a 2.0 TSI Sport EOS which I will pick up Thursday - subject to a hosing test ;)
Congratulations!! It's a really good buy, you will thoroughly enjoy it I promise! :D

I just picked up my new eos last Saturday (had it 1 week). After reading about possible leaks I decided to take it to the car wash and guess what? It leaks!!! It's leaking from the front drivers side, rear passenger side and rear drivers side. I will call VW in the morning and considering this car is 1 week old, I would hope that they fix it.

That said, I have absolutely no complaints about the car... I absolutely love it and it's perfect for the temparate Florida winters!!
