Puddle lights...

And you could always take out the puddle light globes. I do not think that will throw up an error
It WILL throw an error, unless you also disable the door puddle lights with vcds. I know this because my cheap Chinese led retrofits are just on the edge of tripping and storing an intermittent bulb error fault when cranking on a low charge battery. I need to add a small parallel resistance. It beggers belief they design for 12-14 volts and forget bulb failure sensing has to work down as low as 9 Volt without error. :(

Even turn signal leds in the mirrors are monitored, because one of my clone replacements occasionally sets a vcds intermittent lamp fail for a similar reason.

Mainly during daylight at service stations thieves easily jam the 432Mhz carrier signal from your remote, especially when you opt for high sensitivity & longest range. They are sitting close by watching your turn signals as you leave the car.

Unless you are tuned to listen for the chirp or watch for the turn signal flash, you walk away from your car for a coffee etc thinking it is locked, but it is still open ready for them to steal your Christmas presents, the car or both.

MY07 had no puddles in the mirrors or door bottoms. I did what scratchedeos did with leds and there is loads of light even with the door wide open. Modding the doors from memory was fairly easy as most of the loom wiring points are already there. The only problem is the OE door puddles use 5 watt bulbs (?) and leds at about 1.2W will trip a bulb fault on a vcds scan, but not the dash. I'm adding shunt resistors to stop that. Theoretically you need 39 ohms each side, but I'll try a higher resistance to reduce resistor wattage below 4 watts if possible and recheck there are no lamp faults set during and after cranking.

It's funny, the auto-dimming mirrors and puddle lights are actually a couple of the only things I hate about my car. Came standard on the 3.2 with tech. I work third shift so I see them everyday when I leave for work at night and get off in the morning. I'm going to replace them with facelift mirrors without puddles or auto-dimming. The lights only light up the door and give away that it's unlocked. Feels less safe to me then no light and I think it looks terrible. My black vinyl to cover them while I save for facelift mirrors Is on its way.
It's all down to preference. The powerfolds I put on came with them and I already had leds in the door bottoms. When I unlock the car at night the interior lights and puddles come on and anybody wanting to see a car unlocked will see the interior light anyway? This comment did make me look at how they worked: On MY07 with added powerfolds they only come on with a fob unlock when the RLS says it's dark. Since I have auto self locking enabled, I assume they go off when that kicks in at about 7mph? Which may be why I've not noticed them on whilst driving and the tungsten bulbs are still good? Next trip out at night I'll take a closer look at what the puddle lights are doing.

There area few things to know before buying used power fold mirrors from other VAG cars. Mine were Golfs to suit MY07 pre-facelift and physically they are correct.

Aku-Aku has already posted the wiring configuration pinout for powerfolds. Just because they are powerfold doesn't guarantee they have all the internal options fitted and wired. Mine are wired for auto dimming (which I don't use) and the basic power folding feature is only compatible with certain door controllers and that's the problem when retrofitting used parts.

I wasn't interested in the auto dimming feature and got what I thought were all the options I needed. Then on the first frosty moring I noticed the left nearside mirror didn't defrost. I've got to go back and check the wiring to the n/s mirror and hope there's just a wire problem? Worst case I suspect they only fitted heaters on the right drivers mirror glass? It's not a big deal to fit and wire a mirror glass heater if it's not there. Just a bit more pain because I miss not having both working.
