I just got my Eos two weeks ago. Someone at the dealership told me that the rims have a sensor in them and that they can read the tire pressure. I looked through the maual and I don't see anything about that. Is that for real and if so, would there be a way to see the pressure (or see when they are low) on the dash display?

(I love this car and can't wait to drive it every day; it's a blast)

There is a sensor on each wheel which monitors tire pressure in each of the tires. They are part of the TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System). When any of the tires get to a certain low pressure, they trigger a light in the Speedometer area that looks like a tire. There is also a warning in the MFD that says low tire or so I read on another thread. I don't whether there is A way to see a digital readout of the actual real time tire pressures. You can check the tire pressures with a good pressure gauge and keeping the pressures at the recommended figure as posted on a sticker inside the driver's door frame. Most of this info should be in the owner's manual.

Actually not sure there is a monitor on each wheel. Think the pressure monitoring is done via the ABS and traction control systems which detect if any wheel is revolving slightly differently from how it was when the correct pressure was set up. Then it warns you that "something is wrong"!

Actually Andy is correct. While the ABS approach is used on other cars, the Eos does use a separate sender for each wheel. There was a good write up on it in the VW Vortex forums I think showing the actual sender that's attached to the bottom of each inflation stem.

Hmmmm, I thought it was calculated by the rotation of the wheel... When you set it, it knows the rotation of the wheels relative to eachother and speed... If you lose pressure in one, the wheel speeds up as the circumference has changed slightly.

Here's the link to the description. I'd post it directly but the limit on PDFs for this forum is only 19.5kB (?!)

It covers a range of models including the Eos. On further reading of the thread, it looks like there is some doubt on what system the Eos actually uses to check the pressures - one being the transmitter approach, the other using the ABS sensor/wheel speed approach. No idea how you would know which one is in use on any given car.

Actually it uses both depending on the requirements of the market it is sold in.

North America requires TPMS.

In Australia we use the ABS Monitoring System.

It should be in your Driver's Handbook. If it is not listed then it might not be fitted to your vehicle or more likely it is an over site by the Distributor or the Dealer :D

Look again... there is a tire monitoring sensor in all Eos models. The icon in your dash is a yellow deflated looking tire with an exclamation mark in the center. If you keep your car maintained it is likely you won't see it often. I have only seen it once and I have had the car for 9 months.

P.S. take the bow off before you open the top! ;)

Unfortunately, in the UK, I think the flat tyre indicator is only on the Sport and 3.2 V6 models.

Thanks for all the replies.

I checked the dash again and there is an icon for the tire pressure but it flashs on and off very quickly when the key is turned to the on position. It is located just below the Parking Brake warning indicator and looks like a tire cross section with an exclamation point in the center of it. It flashed on and off so fast I had to turn the key several times to make it out. It really doesn't matter too much just how the system works, either ABS rotation or special sensors, I just hope that I never have to see the little yellow light come on for real!

I have just over 1000 miles on the EOS already and took it for the first drive in the mountains near here - what fun! I am most impressed with the smooth power band and flexibility of the engine. You can't reallly feel the turbo kick in but it just goes great and it seemed to handle the curves really well too. When the new gets worn off, I might just push it a little harder and see what it can really do...

BTW the dealer wouldn't let me keep the bow.

Why the button on the centre console for the tyre thingy ? Press it and all i get is a light that stays on for about 3 seconds
That button is to reset the system.
If you have a new tyre fitted for instance then it will have upset the settings, so you first have to make sure all 4 pressures are correct then press that button down for min 3 seconds and the system will memorise the settings then if any wheel rotates at a different speed the yellow warning light will come on to tell you that "something is wrong".
