I would strongly suggest you NOT try! VW have indicated major concern that attempting to open/close the roof while the car is moving places significant stress on the metal parts which could break or cause metal fatigue. There is strong indication that if they find any evidence that the speed sensor has been negated, it will void the warranty on the top. There has been signifcant discussion in another forum about remote modules which override this sensor, and the consensus is to avoid them like the plague. Not worth the damage or warranty risk!

I agree damage is possible if done at a high speed or on a bumpy road. but coming to a stop or rolling on a smooth surface in slow traffic is all I wanted to accomplish. I hate stopping completely. All the old cars worked this way and I never ruined a roof buy using my judgment, not the computers.

Obviously, you have already made up your mind to try it. That's cool and I'm sure that we all hope it works out well for you.

What I know about moving the roof when the car is rolling: One member of another forum had some major damage to the area above the front window because there was a slight bump in the road as he was moving forward and closing the top. Instead of hitting the docking hole, the pin on the roof hit about one inch towards the center of the car. left damage to the liner.

What I also know: I own a module (not the LCT version) and have never installed it. The installation process leaves tell-tale marks that can't be undone. By installing a roof module, if ANYTHING happens to your roof during the standard warranty period, you are giving VW a way to say "nope, we are not fixing it under warranty" even if it WASN'T caused by the module. For a complex set of parts, I'm not willing to take that chance just yet.

What you do with your own car is totally and entirely up to you. That said, how VW responds to warranty requests after you've moved the roof while the car is in motion is totally up to VW. I doubt they'll be very understanding.

Whatever you decide, the Eos is a great car and a happy place to be. Enjoy your car... Here's to hoping we all have some nice "top down" weather for some memorable EDAs.

Wow that stinks for him. But as you all know what he said and what happed might be slightly different. What module do you have that you don't want to install? If you want to part with it pm me the details.

Actually, he provided pictures and full details. It was a very intensive post showing exactly what happened and why.

The real issue is that the roof was not designed to have the car body in motion during operation. The stresses induced by "small" bumps in the road can be too great for the roof unit. True, it may continue to "work" but if you get small cracks or bends in the various parts... ugh. Problems may not appear under those cases for weeks or months.

My module is a Mods4cars unit. I was about to try and swap the module for one that doesn't have an "in motion" option. I'm hoping that my local VW dealer will decide that they will cover it once the big issue for VW is removed from it.

Moving a roof while driving the car--even slowly-- when the roof isn't designed to do so... that's just asking for issues.

Of course, this is all just my personal opinion and really doesn't count for anything at all. My opinion, where your own car is concerned, is worthless. :) But, I'm hoping that knowing I have spent $400 or more on a unit that just sits on a shelf because I am not willing to risk warranty with its use.... Well, frankly, I'm hoping that is a statement in itself. I only wish someone had told me all this before I'd bought it.

Perhaps with the new module and the "operate only when stopped" VW will ease up on the mod.

If you are really interested in buying it from me... I'd consider any reasonable offer. I've spent around $400 buying it and it was never used. So... make me an offer. :)

I think you can PM me through these forums if you are serious about it. I think the website is www.mods4cars.com if you would like to get details on it.

That makes sense just opening to sun roof. ok maybe it's just the excitement to open and close the roof all the time is a sickness for now. putting it up while going slow is the useful thing if it starts raining. OK i'll just forget modifying it.

You guys are way to practical.. lol;)

if you want to keep the car for a while, i wouldn't do it.. the headafche out weigh the coolness factor.. and you will be surprised as to how quickly the coolness evaporates into dorkness when the roof jams with the traunk open and you are trying to pull over to the side with the components flopping around!!!

Plus the manual, you know, that paper thing... states to not operate the roof while the eos is on an incline or ineven surface... thats how delicate it is when its still... imagine while in Motion!!!

Plus whenever i see gadgets like that I just get images of these arrogant persian dudes that we have out here in LA trying to out gadget each other... Do you really want to be one of those guys?

archiea,

I was just inquiring to learn a little. I sincerely appreciate your concern for my car and saving me embarrassment.

I would never do it if it was non-reversible or damaging to the car. I have more street smarts and common sense then most people. And if i did it, it would be done right and never used at such a time that I would cause damage even if it let me.

Most men are into gadgets or a little risk or life wouldn't be fun. ;)

I have a mods4cars module installed and use it to raise and lower the top while moving at least twice a day. Just like everyone's concern, I just make sure I'm on a non-bumpy road and moving at low speed. Obviously, I'm on the other end of the spectrum regarding the concern of moving the top while moving. You'll have a worse case scenario here to watch out for. :)
