hi,
ive just bought an Eos(i live in spain) and im getting rain going into the rear (passenger side) light.

its sitting in it and shorting out the LED lights sending a warning message to the drivers display,

ive contacted my local VW dealer and i have to wait 3 weeks before they will even look at the problem.

has anyone else had this problem ? or can tell me how to take the rear light unit completly out to dry it.

thanks

I have seen this once before on another forum and the only solution is to have the light assembly changed and all the seals around the light redone. You either have a crack in the assembly or a bad seal. Once water gets in you have to change the assembly. You can dry it out but you would still have problems later on.

Actually there's a TB for the Eos about moisture in lamp assemblies. The TB states the assemblies have vent holes to allow moisture to escape. I think you can see these on the rear tail lamps in the center of the lens. The TB states some water vapor is normal and should dissipate as the lamp warms up. However, in your case, I think you have a defective assembly. Too bad you have to wait so long to get service. That’s something I take for granted here in the states. Getting the service manual isn’t a bad idea if you like to tinker or explore the vehicle. Otherwise, you could use the instructions found at mods4cars (to install their roof module, which works very well BTW) to remove the rear trunk panels so that you can get to the lamp assembly. After the panels are removed you should be able to figure out how to remove the taillamp.

I thought that TB is for the headlamps. If there is a lot of water in the taillamp assembly I would belieive that to be a different issue.

Andy,

TB 94-06-02 does state all lamp assemblies are vented, headlamps, fogs and taillamps. But you are correct he definitely has a problem if that much water is collecting.

If you look closely at the center of the tail light you can see a very small (pin) hole. At least I can on mine. I'm assuming that's the vent but I don't think the vent is your problem. As Andy mentioned you probably have a crack or a bad seal.

Looking at the service manual the tail lamp assembly can be disassembled so that the LED PCB can be replaced. You might be able to get your tail lamp working again if you can remove the tail lamp from the vehicle and disassemble to remove the water. At least that would allow you to drive safely until you can get it to your dealer. If you do decide to do this I would take a picture of the water inside (I'm assuming you can see it through the lens) to show your dealer. But there's also the possibility that the lamp is now bad and you could be doing all this for nothing. I guess it depends how adventurous you are :)

Taking anything apart is usually the easy bit. It's putting it back together again that's impossible...!
Very true, if you end up with spare parts after you are done, (not that this has EVER happened to me  ) you better hope you took pictures of it together after you remove any covers.

Since this has obviously happened with my last vehicle (and it worked fine after I put the headlight assembly back together), I found 2 clips a day later in the garage... took me a very long time to find their proper place. I recommend you take a photo of the screws, clips, wire, etc... after the cover is off to make sure you put it back together exactly as it was. Though I would hope the rear light is easier than the headlamps.

good luck.

At last, got it fixed!!!! it was the seals so i didn't pay a penny........:D
Glad it was a simple fix. If there was as much water trapped inside as you say, I would be concerned about the potential effects long term on the led electronics from corrosion.
