The one design shortcoming I see in the Eos is its tailgate-squareback: I find it VERY difficult to get a clear sight-zone when backing up.
Does VW have/support a rear-looking mini cam w/wireless monitor LCD screen for the Eos? There are third party euipments that wire through the backup lights but I don't know whether installing the equipment will void some portion of my warranty - worse yet, corrupt something in an electronic control unit.
Appreciate any info and, if this gets to Deutschland - bedanke mich im Voraus!

Rear View Camera Install

Thanks for the info. It nudges me closer to installing a CCD optics package.
One thing: Will the wiring breach the skin of the car -and/or will it have to pass beneath a water insulation gasket? My Eos is waterproof to the extent I regularly run it thru a hi-pressure wash without a drop getting inside. I'd hate to mess with that success story.
Understand, the equiip is wi-fi at 2.4GHz and that the optics probably mount on the license plate holder.
Sounds good - but will it work that way? Will the dealership have to re-flash memory after the package is installed?

I hate the small details but they're the booby traps in today's brainy cars!

Unfortunately I can't answer all your questions. I and running the lines down one of the sides of the car. I have not yet removed the rear seat area/paneling but I do not fear much in that area. My camera is a hard wired solution that will be run out through the lighting above the rear plate as my current solution is a free license plate mount camera, wish I had wireless. So my only breach should be at that location. The power for the unit is drawn directly off of my aftermarket navigation system. Are you looking at an oem solution? If so can you provide me with a link, I would love to take a look.

I have a surface mount camera that I was going to install directly above the number plate.

The trouble is that the bumper skin is so close to the sheetmetal, that you need to remove it to run the wire, wether to below the car or to go through one of the grommets for the tail lights.

The only other option is to drill straight through, but I tend to think there is a real rust issue in perforating the metal.

Running the wiring from the boot to the dash shouldn't be much of an issue.

GTiceman, what aftermarket head unit do you have?

I have a Pioneer AVIC-F900BT. It is a fairly decent double din nav head unit. It has some serious performance problems - but has the best iPod controller on the market and excellent maps.

I have looked pretty hard at integrating a back up camera - they make a very good add on for that series of navigation units. but they did not recommend mounting it as low as the rear bumper. I could not find a specific quantified height limit to where it needed to be mounted - so I would love to know more details on your plan and what head unit you have.

Regards

Eric

Daneel, I feeel for you. I know the flaws of the F series thus is why I waited and got an avic-X910BT. I have owned two avic-z1's in different vehicles and loved them.

I ordered it from crutchfield almost as soon as it was released and it was confirmed they fixed a lot of the issues from the previous gen models. It came with a free Boyo license plate mount camera when I ordered it but plugs in pretty simply. It does not allow for the rear parking guidelines like the pioneer but my primary use will be to judge my rear distance for the trunklid.

The car is currently in the shop right now and I most likely wont get it back til Thurs so I don't know when I will get the camera mounted as I start law school next week. I am hoping soon as I want to test it out and see if it is worth it.

Running the lines shouldn't be too bad, just need to find where to go through at the rear seats and then how to come out at the license plate lights. I have an idea as it seems one light seems to have some ability for the tiny wires to pass through. Won't know until I have some time to tear the car apart again.

no running the cables shouldnt be too bad. the license plate is an ideal place to put the camera (from a install point of view).

if i had known about the X910 when I got the F900 i may have waited too. but a few road trips over the past year (i got the F900 right when it came out) have made it worth while. the instrument color matching is another great feature i forget to mention. pioneer has some good ideas.

I had a AVIC-D1 in my Jetta and liked that a bunch too. the D1 made it so that I could only look at touch screen GPS. I watched as a friend manually scrolled letter by letter to enter an address in a band new 07 Infinity - I thought "no chance".

I haven't given up on the parking guide lines and extrapolated overhead view. if i can craft something up i will post here.

not to get too far off topic - but how did the debadge go? i have heard people have needed a repaint of the trunk lid because glue residue couldn't be removed.

Yea I love pioneer, a friend of mine went kenwood just due to the F series issues. I love the customization but I hate that I can't easilly mute the navigation voice. I would love to have the pioneer guidelines, will hafta look into that later. I think it is more due to the camera rather than the avic software.

The trunk debadge was easy, they came right off using floss on a hot day. Used some bug and tar remover to take the last of the adhesive off. The lid is actually getting repainted now due to a TSB about tail light tabs causing the lid paint to crack. Hopefully they don't put the badging back on.

I got a non oem rear view camera installed in my rear bumper, it is not a bad one...
I ever heard from my friends that he painted his trunk lid, but did some wrong performance, he told me it should be carefully painted and with good paint. All the sensor will be unresponsive.
How is your performance of the sensor now? I think professionally painted would be available.

I am looking at a backup camera system for my 2014 EOS Komfort that can be used wired or wireless and plugs into the port on the back of the navigation system in the dash. The company is TadiBrothers. They claim it will work as if it were factory installed. The price is $299. Has anyone used them? Or is there a better system that uses the existing radio/navigation module? Thanks for any feedback. Redbird

This is the one I used for my RNS510.

Wireless cameras tend to be unreliable. Signals can be lost from outside interferences and they are slower to come on. I know from direct experience.:(

For only $93 with very quick shipping.

Nav-tv

I'm having a local car audio place install the reverse camera and interface module from NAV-TV

The camera fits into the rear logo section where you release the trunk, which I think is how the Executive trim has it factory installed.

https://navtv.com/products/NTV-KIT508/vw-cam.html

The module interface plugs directly into the rear port of the EOS navigation System after you program it, which is done by the audio place.

I know its costs higher then what the other posts are talking about, but these fit like the factory.

Once it's installed, I'll let you know how it works.

The items were installed this past Wednesday and the camera works as if it came from the factory for the EOS Executive Trim (I drive the Komfort trim).

The screen display is bright, the boundary lines are sharp and clear, and it is integrated with the computer programming of the entertainment system that the options screen works with the display console buttons as well as the touch screen.

The VW logo trunk latch pops open and the camera slides open when put in reverse, and if you are just opening the trunk with the handle, the camera is hidden so it doesn't interfere with the trunk operations.

It was pricey compared to what was discussed in this thread ($1,400 with installation and tax) but I think it was worth it to have it work like an OEM product.

I thought all Eos models had these. Rick.
You are correct. but some like having visual rear view as well. The parking sensors on their own are o.k but can have blind spots around the side corners. The reversing cameras are just pinhole electronic cams often coming on with the reversing switch. Some replace the interior mirror with an lcd to show the rear view, whilst others wire the camera into their radio/media box if there is a video input connection.

I'm looking for rear view with good picture quality and remote zoom. :) I'll post up a photo when I get one wired in the Spring, but it won't be a cheapo fit in the badge unit.

What the EOS really lacks is front parking sensors and if it wasn't for having to color match the sensor heads in the front fender, I would fit those and make sure they work on the corners. With all the low kerbs around, you need them underneath as well!

There's a thing. My EOS 'Sport' has them and I just read the facelift EOS 2012 has parking sensors on the Lux and Executive versions, but NOT for the Komfort.

I thought my TDi Sport was their 'Lowline' because there are many empty fuse slots for options I don't have, but perhaps the Komfort is even lower than lowline?

Compared to Japanese or Korean cars for the same kind of money, VW features seem a bit basic.
