Am on my hols, so only just seen the dire budget! Anyone done the maths yet to see how the nice little rise in tax is going to affect us?! Even if it doesn't come in till next year, might have to start saving now! - esp as my eos will be 2.5 yrs old and i'll be looking at getting a new one!

Gas emissions

I looked in the EOS brochure that I have. That quotes the g/km for a 2.0 TDI automatic as 177 g/km with the manual around 154 ish. I suppose it depends if the government use the VW figures or some other test. A cynic would say they'll use the figures that give them the most money!!!!

Just checked the governmenrt website and they quote 177 g/km so tax should be £170!

OK, here's what I think is the tariff effective 13th March 2008:-

Petrol:
1.4 TSI 115PS Manual = 158 g/km = £145 / £79.75 (12m/6m)
2.0 FSI 150PS Manual = 198 g/km = £210 / £115.50
2.0T FSI 200PS Manual = 194 g/km = £210 / £115.50
2.0T FSI 200PS DSG = 194 g/km = £210 / £115.50
3.2 V6 FSI 250PS DSG = 219 g/km = £210 / £115.50

Diesel:
2.0 TDI 140PS Manual = 158 g/km = £145 / £79.75
2.0 TDI 140PS DSG = 177 g/km = £170 / £93.50

It goes up next year, of course!

regards

Looks like governments use manufacturer data which is actualy independent lab tested data for the g/km figures... In France, the pollution-related tax is now a reality when you purchase a new car, not YET as part of an annual tax (our former 'vignette' was killed a few years ago). The 2.0 TDI manual supports no extra charge, whereas the DSG carries a +750 EUR tax... Am glad I bought mine a few months before!

I'm a cynic on the otherside of the world, how do these taxes and charges help the environment (or is it more revenue for the government)?

The system in place here is meant to scare people away from buying cars with bigger engines or that are more likley to pollute (4WD...), by increasing the price tag... MY two cents is that is is rather discriminatory and useless, since most of the poeple who would buy those 'polluter-cars', would anyhow care little to spend 500 or 2'000 extra euros on a 40'000+ car ;-)

...As long as they don't start taxing my bike!!!!

I should have checked the CO2 emmisions before commiting my reply. Thanks for the correction it makes it a bit more paletable.

Actually you are partly right Graham. In the early brochures (I have one here) the 2.0T is listed as 202g/km whereas on the VW website its down to 194 (below the 200 barrier). I wonder what fiddling went on to get it to the right side of 200. :)
