Hi guys,

I asked upon picking up my new Eos just over a week ago about roof maintenance/lubrication after reading a few articles and threads on this forum. The garage weren't aware of krytox or the like and said nothing need be done. Having a quick browse today i saw the article below on What Car:-

http://www.whatcar.com/news-article.aspx?NA=232992

In addition to reassuring owners that the roof mechanism IS covered within the 3 year warranty I was interested to read the following quote:-

Keep roof lubricated
VW has also advised that all Eos owners should receive a roof lubrication pack when taking delivery of their new car.

'It is necessary for customers to clean and lubricate the seals on their Eos at least twice a year,' said the spokesman. 'This is because the rubber seals can become dry and contaminated by natural road dirt.

'If the seals become dry, the roof can become noisy while driving.'

Alternatively a retailer can lubricate the seals for you, but this is likely to incur a charge.

Has anyone received such a pack or asked for one? What response did you get? I'm thinking of printing this article and calling in to my dealer.

Picked up my car 5 weeks ago and there was a small starter pack of lubricants for the roof seals in the boot. Also I had arranged an Autoglym wax treatment but was told that all dealers had been instructed by VW not to treat new Eos's with this as apparantly it was damaging the seals...........

I saw that article and wondered about it myself. I'm trying to decide if we should call VW Canada first for confirmation (since that was a UK article) and then go to the dealer with confirmation that we were supposed to get this... Or just go to the dealer first (where we'll probably just get "Wha?" as a response...)

VW know the lubricat as "Special Lubricant". Krytox is the brand who makes the lubricant, but this is not how VW will know it. The part number is on a previous post of mine from last year.....

It is an easy job to lubricate the seals and the instructions and the part number is in the user manual for the car...

My Eos is now 14 months old and I had the Autoglym treatment from new. No leaks so far and it's seen plenty of rain.

I have lubricated the seals twice with Krytox. You know when to do it, because the roof starts to creak a bit. Lubrication will stop all noises.

I called into the dealers after reading this article and they said they weren't aware of it but after checking are happy to carry out the lubrication maintenance for me for free.

I have had the Autoglym treatment. In all honesty i can't see it damaging seals and have a long history with Autoglym and really like the products.

In terms of any leaks, i think the bit of water that comes in when you open the doors is making it hard for me to tell if it is leaking, as when the windows drop when you open the car a bit comes in and i'm not sure whether there's a spot on each of the doors near the top of the front pillar where a little comes in.

I just posted this in the other thread:

If you look at the service manual, lubricating the roof is part of the service schedule. A bulletin went out about this last year with instructions....

"TB600708ConvertibleSeals-CleaningandLubricating"

The dealer should follow this as part of a service as far as I am aware...

Regarding any leaking, you would know if it was leaking.... If you have to struggle to find it, then it probably isn't!

When you unlock the car, water will get in when the window goes down...

Thanks Simon. I have to admit that it was raining fairly hard the other week when i ventured out and i did feel that the water may still have been what came in when i unlocked the car and the windows moved down a touch. The dealer is going to keep my car and check it properly though when they do the lubrication. There does appear to be a very small indentation on each side though in the rubber seal near the top of both pillars. Overall though, having driven in pretty bad weather i'm fairly happy at the watertightness so far!

Hi all. Just thought I would mention that my roof has been treated with the lubricant by the dealer whilst having its first service. Just got the car back yesterday.

Some of the early problems with the roof seals were attributed to the use of silicon based waxes and their affect on the seals. I think if you look back you will find reference to white deposits and seal hardening. Autoglym shouldn’t harm the seals physically but may in time diminish their sealing properties. You have to wax your car so the secret is to periodically (3 or 4 times a year if you are keen) get any residues off the seals and reapply krytox. Krytox is an industrial lubricant with a wide range of applications and its use as a convertible roof seal lubricant is well documented but not well understood - however, it works. The key is to get the seals squeaky clean - IMS with a lint free cloth is best - and then apply the krytox lubricant as indicated. You should receive three krytox wipes in a cardboard sleeve (about 7 inches by 3) when the vehicle is delivered. They are like Kentucky fried hand wipes, seem very naff but work. Once you've used them buy some bottles from the chaps in Reading. The stuff seems to have assumed mythical status in EOS circles.

Sunscreemer & Trish, I will bring some comp. slips to the meet on the 22nd, I asked for them to hand out when I ordered the Krytox for Gary from GBR Reading. It works out so much cheaper a bottle (£16 a bottle instead of £38 quoted by our dealer) from them and they are so helpful. Alternatively the telephone number for them is 0118 982 0567. You have to buy two bottles but you can always share with someone as we did.

Thanks SK2. I have actually got a bottle of Krytox which we bought from vw last year and unfortunately paid the 30 odd pound for! I know where i will get my next bottle from though, thanks! See you on 22nd.

This is incredibly useful info - so I went rootling, and found a pack exactly as descibed.

Do I assume that my baby has had her first 'KFC', or would you advise doing it now? I did hear squeaks last weekend, but having had so much rain here, creaks seem to have gone.

I lube my seals every few months... Just did it again this morning!

There are certain rattles it won't get rid of, but I have learned to get used to them.... I put my foot on the pedal and that makes me forget! ;)
