I have a 1 year old black TDI and there seems to be an increasing amount of creaks from the roof. I have heard that you can buy a lubricant to stop this and wondered could anyone help. Also how often should this be applied ?

I am loathed to buy this from VW as there has been a number of problems since I bought the car, namely -

stereo didn't work
scratch on bumper
no matts supplied
no internal padding on roof mech. (went back 4 times)

and this was a new car !!!!!!!!

Sorry for the rant but the last 2 news cars I bought (Mini & Altea) were perfect and nothing ever went wrong with them.

Apparently you can buy Krytox GPL105 (someone correct me if im wrong!)... I only use the VW Special Lubricant, but I have been told that it is the same stuff!

It is easy to apply and well worth the effort!

Thanks

Lubrication of the seals is described in the owner's manual, and the VW part number is listed. It's expensive stuff - around 90USD for a tiny bottle. Do a search, as there's a lot of helpful info available on the best ways to lubricate, as well as alternate sources of the lubricant.

You can get the Krytox GPL105 oil (which VW repackages) that SiJ2000 mentioned considerably cheaper. In the U.S. THT Group sells a 1/2 kilo bottle for 179USD. Whether they ship overseas, I don't know.

Krytox comes in 30ml bottles from GBR Tech (amongst others). Minimum order is £30 and as each 30ml bottle is £18 you will need to buy two at a time. If you email [email protected] he will be able to assist you with any queries regarding this.

They took my order and delivery was the next working day.

VW on the other hand were charging £40.99 for ONE 30ml bottle and wouldn't deliver to me as the lubricant was "hazardous" and couldn't be posted (which is complete codswallop!).

Please don't waste your money going through VW to get this lubricant. GBR Tech manufacture Krytox which does the trick.

There are lots and lots of threads on how/where to apply, if you do a search for lubricant, krytox, seals or the like.

Happy lubing! lol :D ;)

Just realised that we aren't all from good old Great Britain - you may have a more localised dealer if you are in the USA if anyone else wants to contribute these details then that would help!

Thanks for your help

I have taken your advice and ordered the lubricant from a lovely man at GBR tech. It cost £45 and should last for ages and means I don't have to hand over anymore money to my local VW dealership. :)

I have also recently ordered Krytox from GBR tech. I found them to be informed, fast, friendly and inexpensive and would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone on this site.....................

Hi

Despite lubricating my Eos with Krytox recently I am experiencing a lot of creaks from the roof and wondered whether anyone had any other suggestions for a cure.

There are no creaks when the roof is down, so just as well the roof is always down except when its raining, even when the temperatures are below zero!

However the creaks are getting very irritating so any suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks, Richard

PS I followed the instructions on applying the lubricant as shown elsewhere on this forum ( http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=3087297 ) but is there a mistake on image 14? It indicates a seal with the caption " Do not lubricate this seal.! It is fuzzy, not like the others". It seems to point to the wrong one, the correct one is surely the one below? Or did I get this wrong?

When I took my car in to have something done a while back the dealer said that he had noticed how loud and creaky my car was when driving it through to the work area. He krytoxed it for me and said the creaks were no more! May I suggest either taking it to the dealer and seeing if they will krytox for you for free or just adding more krytox. That's all I can suggest I'm afraid!

It is definitely the roof. The creaks are still there but maybe not quite so bad as before I krytoxed it. Perhaps I'm just being picky or is a degree of creaking inevitable with hard drop tops? ...........Maybe I missed a bit, guess I'll have to re-do it to make sure.

I'll keep you posted

I you need Krytox or anything else in USA 1stVWparts.com is a good source and they have all the parts diagrams for the Eos and other VWs on-line if you need a part you can usually find it on one of the diagrams so you don't have to know the exact part number of the part you need to order from them.

They sell at about 20-30% less than my local dealer parts desk is willing to sell to me as an individual owner.

Brit-lube

After searching the web, I called this company who assured me that their product 'Chrystal' is the same exactly, and it is only £15 + VAT for a 28gm syringe. They are very nice to talk to and are on:

Syringe arrived this morning, so here goes!
