I don't do many miles a year and have just come on its 1st birthday and 5600 miles. The MFD comes up and says service in 5000miles, then 4800 miles, then 4700 and now at 5900miles it says service now!
I suppose I will need to get it serviced anyway to shut the MFD up.

This is my first car with such information provided but the service interval was supposed to be 20k miles or 2y when purchased.

What gives with the engine management computer, sounds to me like its broken (perhaps a MS effort?).

Any one else seen a similar problem or perhaps its correct?

Hi Graham,
Could it be that it is responding to the one year time interval. Service is in 5000 miles or 1 year whichever come first .... or something like that?

Hi Fred,
Quite possibly. However I was told when I bought the car that they would not expect to see it again for servicing till 2y or 20k miles. I was hopping for a bit more than a year though. Still I might as well get it for a service to get rid of the message. I suspect its not been programmed correctly for long service intervals.

Regards

Simon, What's the point of using synthetic oil with its high price tag and longevity if you are going to treat it like standard oil. Surely better just to have filled it with mineral oil in the first place.

Engone oil and filter change should be done after 1 year.... This is in the maintenance manual for the car. Even if nothing else is done, I would go to a dealer and get an oil/filter change and get the book stamped.

You will prolong the engine life by doing this...

You can get a long life service with newer VWs, but it is very important to know that low mileage cars require oil changes more frequently that high mileage cars. This is because the engine is probably run colder for a longer period of time.

None of us want to waste money, but it is essential to replace the oil... Mine is also low mileage...

For that reason, I actually remove a few litres of oil myself during the year as a partial oil change without the filter as an interim measure to protect the engine...

I will get the service.
But it still does not address the issue regarding the use of the synthetic oil, why bother if you don't get any longer life from it?

The engine type dictates the oil type... You can't use mineral just because the service inteervals are lower.... Modern engines run much hotter than old ones and I would never use anything other than synthetic in a new engine....

The oil I use for my interim changes in Mobil1 0W40 fully synthetic. I know this is a very expensive oil, but I feel it is worth it....

The long life servicing is more to do with mileage vs time than anything else....

Sorry for not having better news, but this low mileage issue is costing me too! I just got rid of a 3.5 year old Smart Car with just 9000 miles on the clock!

My EOS will probably end up the same way after three or four years! VERY low mileage for age! It sits on my drive for most of the time!

My goodness Graham, when did you start getting so grumpy! Just joking. For someone like me who puts lots of miles on, it is somewhat academic since the miles override the time parameter. In your case, it is not all the expensive considering it is only once a year! Cheap insurance. Hope all is well with you?

Thanks Fred,
Just a grumpy old man I guess. You are right about it being not that expensive (I hope), it was just one of those assurance things by the saleman that was getting to me. As for the cheap insurance it seems to be getting more expensive every year, I feel sorry for the younger ones just getting started with a new car (or even an old one) where the premiums are sky high.

Best regards

blimey Ive done 5k in mine in three months, hopefully that will settle down.
noticed the oil was down so rang dealer who said they use castrol longlife and I should get it from halfords. Got a bit bewildered in the shop (that happens a lot lately  ) so went out and checked the manual again. Its castrol edge 5W-30 (VW 504 00) £13.99 for 1 litre (eek!), used 250 ml to get oil back to max again. I think the 2.0T uses oil early in its life till it settles down.

Hi David,
That seems a bit high in consumption. It may be extrvagent but I have changed with synthetic oil every 8000 kms or 5000 miles for first 16000 kms and have not needed any in between. Going forward, I plan to follow manual and change every 10000 miles, still hopefully with no addup in between. From my point of view, I'd rather put in new oil than top up old oil.

My experience with service warning

Hi, I have a USA 2007 EoS 2.0T w DSG gear box and the "service" started to show on the dashboard display somewhere before the odo turned over 5000 miles. I was on a 1000 mile trip that started out around 4500 end ended at 5500 and don't remember when it came on but I am sure it was well before 5000 rolled over. The car had been driven less than 1 year so I am sure this was due to miles not days since first service.

The Sterling Virginia VW dealer did the 5000 mile service for me. All they did is some visual inspections of brakes and such and an oil change with Mobil 1 synthetic oil and a filter change.

I have the Bentley US Service Manual CD and that is all the VW 5K service interval calls for. Love a VW Dealer that does not try to sell vehicle service actions that VW says are not needed.

Just an update on the service cost for a 10k service £144 . Running like a dream now (perhaps psycological??). Can some one check for me if there is a service record in the handbook (section 1)?
I'm sure there is and if so they have not put it back in mine after the service. (1 black mark)

Phoned dealer, they forgot to put it back. I'm not going senile after all. The sticker is on the door as you stated.
Thanks for the reply.
Cheers
