Just joined and picking up my new 2.0 TDI sport on Friday.
Having found the forum it has been very informative and clearly contains owners who know about their cars. I have been a motorbike enthusiast all my life and as such have tried to mirror my experience. Having had MV Agusta's I am aware of the additional cost of owning works of art.

My question is this:

VW are offering a Service & Maintenance plan, with and without tyres.
from discussing with them the cost equates to £35.65 @ month over a 3 yr period = £1283.40. (With tyres)

Can any one tell me who is locked into this plan, is it worthwhile?

The plan takes care of standard serving and replacing through wear & tear Brake, Cooling, Electrical, Engine, Suspension and Transmission issues, albeit I would hope that none would be worn out after 3yrs (30,000 miles), (except consumables pads etc...)
The roof mechanism is not mentioned within the plan, albeit the booklet appears generic to VW, is this covered, or is every one relying on the warranty?

I appreciate the argument between VW dealers and Independents in regard to who is best to deal with service - maintenance of the vehicle; however I am a believer to a degree that you get what you pay for.:)

Appreciate any thoughts before making a decision next week.

They are also offering GAP insurance of £395.00 for 3 yr cover. Taking into account the world we have to live in with litigation becoming the norm now in England this looks value for money I appreciate you pays your money and takes your chance, thoughts or experience sought on this

Do a bit of research first !

Hi Geoff and welcome - I'm sure you're going enjoy your new EOS :)

I would recommend you phone a few dealers and find out the "Over the counter" prices for servicing during the next 3 years, based on your anticipated mileage and use, taking into account that the new car will be covered by a 3 year warranty for parts and labour ( at least in the UK it should be )....

As for the RTI ( Return To Invoice ) or "Gap" Insurance - which for the benefit of everyone else is an insurance policy that will cover the difference between the amount your paid for the car, and it's "Market value" ( which will be the amount your insurance company will pay out ), at the time of a write off or unrecovered theft.... again - shop around !

I just did a quick Google search and ( without wishing to advertise - I have no connection with this company ) I found http://www.car2cover.co.uk

They allow you to choose the amount of cover you want, ( £10k, £15k, £20k, £25k ) and provide cover for 1, 2, 3 or 4 years, if taken out within 6 months of purchase. Their £25k cover for 4 years is less than the amount you mention ;)

I did both when I got my car... I think the service and maintenance is a bargain (personal opinion) if you consider what it covers... Roof is not relevant to that, but is covered under warranty anyway!

Hope that helps...

Paint and interior protection

Thanks, I will go for the service & maintenance contract, especially as the dealer is 2 miles down the road. One question I do have now, I am having the outside paint work and interior protected, however I have read that this process can cause damage to the seals, and as such should be avoided.
Is this correct in part or in whole, or is it a myth ?

gap insurance is good

HI

I have had my car a week now yippie

The car protection is designed for the car inside and out and should not damage it but do ask the garage pop them an email then you have it in writing.

Anyway i have the gap insurance this is on the advice of 3 different insurance comanies who all tell me that they would only cover any loss for the 1st year the gap insurance i have covers it for 3 years and with the slow depreciation in the eos i think its well worth it. ( 3 years = long long i have to pay vw finance )

I have my car on a long life maintance plan (same as husbands 1 year old passat with same engine) and based my decision on service plan based on this.

Hes only had to buy oil which has been about £40 and 1 service in now 16 months but hes done almost 20k miles. I dont intend to do this much milage in my eos so i did not think a service plan is going to be of value. Yes when you take the tyres etc into count it might be but if i save the money i would pay them then i can just get the tyres from this. (est replace cost of decent tyres are between £600 and £700 for the whole set but usualy there is a sale on and £300 is much more likly if i shop around). But again i am only planning 10k miles a year and a set of tyres should last me twice that!!

I love my car and it will get the same treatment as my old one :) every 2 weeks it will get washer fluid topped up and oil checked and tyre pressure checked and any stones in the tyre tread removed. My old car from an x reg ford focus 1.6 zetec which had over 150,000 miles on the clock and the engine was as good as new and could from a cold start beat a preformance car, i know i did it.

Some hard waxes may affect the seals (in as much as they can dry out)... However, I don't see how they can be ruined. Just clean the wax off the seals and then lubricate them with the correct fluid and all should be fine!

Try using a little petrol on swabs to clean the seals before applying the Krytox and all will be well. I tend to use lighter fuel as its easier to control the flow from the tin and its a lot cleaner.
