After reading several threads it seems a good idea to treat the rubber seals around the lid. Others have mentioned a kit that came in the trunk that contained a factory lubricant, my '08 didn't have such a kit. So what to use? The manual has the strangest wording, possibly worthy of a bit on the Jay Leno Tonight show....(see photo below). So is silicone ok or not? Many thanks, Kurt

Kurt,
Could you copy the part of the page that shows how to care for CSC roof seal? I am curious about the 2008 prodedure.

Safest solution is not to use any silicone based compound on any of the Eos seals. Use the Krytox (Dupont) that has been mentioned on this forum lots of times. Its very inert, and a little goes a long long way.

DO NOT Use Silicone...... It doesn't have the right chemical properties to seal and lubricate.....

Krytox is much more expensive, but there is a reason for that!!

I also recommend the liquid bottle as shown in the owners manual.

My 08 EOS come with some kit in the trunk for threating the rubber seals and i willscanthe procedure as soon as i come back from work. But as i can see .. there is not much inside those little bags. I think its one use stuff.

Anyway ... how often do i have to threat my rubber seals cause my EOS is one month and three days old.

The 2007 manuel says " We recommend treating the dry rubber seals with a soft, fine-pored sponge and special lubericant (Liquid) G 052 172 A1." This is for both the CSC roof, doors and lid. The stuff is not cheap, $60 for 30 ml, but you don't use much. My dealer had to order it. The windows do get streaked after using it. The dealer said to do this twice a year.

See here is where all the confusion lies. Most of us with 2007 Eos have that info listed in the owner's manual showing the special lubricant part number to be used for the seals. It is especially important for use on the CSC roof seals. It can be used on all seals actually. But the reason I asked Kurt to post the pages for the care of the roof seals is to see if the manual has a new procedure. There have been rumors of a change in the roof seals and and also possibly a new maintainence procedure in the 2008 models. When I did my seals with the VW stuff I did all including the doors and trunk. If the lubricant is safe enough for the roof seals, it should be ok for all the seals. If you recheck the manual it shows lubing all seals except the trunk. The trunk seal looks and feels the same as the door seals.

This is from page 26 of section 3.2 of my 08 Lux manual. The page that actually refers to the seals for roof (as opposed to the sunroof) point to this page for proper cleaning procedures. I'm going to stop by the dealer tomorrow and see if they have the Krytox and if they have it ask why silicone is mentioned several times in the manual. Cheers, Kurt

Kurt,
Thanks for posting the page above. From that info it appears that either VW has changed the maintainence procedure for 08 or the seals have been changed. In your case it appears to be ok to use a silicone based product. For those of us with an 07 we will have to use the special VW lubricant.

Reading both sets of information Kurt presented it appears that VW don't really know which is best, silicone or flurohydrocarbon. For longevity and less frequent lubrication I would still go for Krytox as a matter of choice.

Cheers

Sillicone lubricant can be used in some of the rubber components. The roof seals must be treated with Krytox..... I advise people to use Krytox for everything as it is cleaner, better for the rubber and then no mistakes can be made. I appreciate that it is more expensive, but if you do it correctly, it doesn't take much to do all the seals..

Simon,
You normally are right on but on this topic there are just too many variables. I had Kurt post the page from his 08 manual on how to care for his roof seals and I don't see any requirement to use a Krytox type lubricant. I don't personally know anyone with an 08 so I don't have access to the manual unless I go and bug my dealer. Maybe you can get access to the manual and can check and see if the Krytox type lubricant is still required.

I checked my manual last night and the page on caring for rubber seals is the same as that posted by CPC (see image below) on this thread http://www.vweosclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=825
As far as I know I have an 08 build (June 25), so unless the manual has not been updated, Krytox is still required, or the American market gets different rubber seals.

Thanks for the info, I bought some vw krytox and did all the seals in my new eos, it was an easy project. I then thought if it helps eos seals I may as well do all the seals on the top of my 2007 vette. I cant believe the difference in the vette, no more creaking sounds. This stuff really works.:)

Leo,
What print date is on the back of your manual? Also what country is listed for the manual?

Print status date is 03.2007
Englisch (sic) date is 05.2007
Can't find any mention of any country in the manual!

Also, just happened to visit the VW parts department this afternoon.
Asked about the bottle of Krytox, none in stock, but they can get it in.
Will only cost $155 (thats about US$120)!

'Englisch' is of course simply German for 'English'. It's printed in Germany so the name of the language is probably always in German, e.g. 'Italienisch' for Italian!
