Just wondered if anyone else has experienced a similar problem to me. Twice in 8 months since I took delivery of my Eos there has been a loud bang (as though the glass sunroof had been hit by a stone) and the radio/sat nav cuts out for around 10 seconds but the engine remains running. The system then reboots itself and everything is ok again, although the GPS takes a few minutes to correct itself. Both times it occurred less than 10 minutes into a journey, travelling at under 20mph. If it happens again, I may take it to a VW garage to be checked out as it is annoying and doesn't half give you a shock when you're driving! Any views welcome.

Not something I've come accross personally or have had recorded on this site. I think a visit to the dealer is in order.

This is a potentially dangerous problem and I would be heading straight to the warranty service centre with no delay.

I would not like to be in the situation where the failure does not reset and the car is immobilised in heavy traffic or a long way from home.

PLEASE let us know what caused the problem when it is fixed.

Just curious. Does anything else happen like gauges go crazy or similar? Does the car's driving parameters change?

Wow!
Never had that happen. I would take the car in as soon as posible. VW in America has a reputation for electrics problems among other quality issues. I think that all the cars today are loaded with so much electronics, that there is just plain more stuff to go wrong with any brand you buy,
My Dad use to say that automakers build in built in obsolesence, so that you are forced to buy a new one, especially after the warrantee ends. Good luck and let us know how the dealer handles it and what resolution they come to.

Mahalo (thank you)

Just wondering, does the trip counter reset?
If so, then it might be something similar to what happened with me.

VW did the PDI but didn't check the battery terminals. I'd have a couple of times where I'd gotten into the car and the trip counter had reset but the clock was fine.

The third time it happened, the car lost power completely. I had to call the AA out. Basically, the connectors on the battery weren't tightened up properly.

AA man tightened them up and not had it happen ever since.

I'd suggest having a quick look at the battery terminals.

This sound like a loose, or damaged battery cable. The bang is most likely the cable loosing then regaining current. The system would reboot, the engine would not quit. Take to the dealer and have them fix and note it even if it was just loose. The inrush power serge could damage other features.

Thanks for all your replies and FYI I'm taking my car to be checked out by VW this weekend as was getting slightly concerned by the responses. I will keep you posted on the outcome.

NinjaDonkey, the trip counter and clock are both fine, with neither re-setting. This seems to be a new problem to everyone, including VW!

Of course, when I spoke to VW they tried to convince me that the bang was a stone hitting the sunroof, but as I was virtually stationary at traffic lights the second time, I said this was impossible.

Hopefully it's just a loose or damaged battery cable and nothing too serious...

Hmmm, if there was an electrical bang, it would very likely pop a fuse, so stuff wouldn't come back on. As you said it was the NAV, I would imagine that the bang is coming throught the speakers as it cuts out... If I understand what you say correctly, my thought would be a faulty NAV unit... Especially if it has to recalibrate the GPS fully on reboot... Ignition power cutout would not cause this...

FYI VW have run a diagnostics test and updated the software for the GPS which they said could have caused the problem. My Eos is still in the garage for some other work so will let you know if VW have solved the problem when I get the car back.
