This is the second time this has happened to me...

I'm a bit of a stickler at the moment in that I like to fill up and set the trip counter to 0 so that I can get a rough idea of how many miles I'm getting to a tank.

Did a long trip up to Birmingham and back at the weekend. 368 mile round trip and used just under half a tank. Quite amazed.

Anyhoo... Had another issue on the way back which I'm posting in another post and decided to go to the VW dealer on the Monday.

Popped to the dealer on Monday but no-one in the service department was there as it was Easter Monday.

Got back in the car, started the engine and noticed the trip counter had gone to 0 and all of the other counters had been reset to 0 also.

First time it happened I thought I'd done something. This time I know I didn't do anything to reset it.

Has anyone else experienced this and, if so, were you able to rectify it?

Cheers

I believe the car has 2 trip systems no1 has a permanant memory that is rest with 00 dash button and system no2 which resets it self with ignition off time which I think is 2hrs? The owners handbook offers some help. Have you tried to cycle through your MFD with the buttons on either the MFSW or wiper stalk?? Could just be its working as advertised ?? Hope this helps

Had a rethink and a play with my Eos I may have confused it with my Audi's operation:
Could this just be a sticky reset button that has not fully released since last operation ??

It's not anything to do with the 2 trip systems. The Reset button under the wiper stalk is for resetting the mpg/mileage etc. values whereas the 0.0 button in the dash is for resetting the trip computer.

Neither seem to be at all sticky.

I'll go through and have a look at the "1" and "2" values for each when I get in the car later.

Righty... Well, I think the fault has been found which is causing this...

After going to the gym last night, I got back to the car, got in, put my key in the ignition, turned it, lights came on.... lights went off!

Oh.

Ah.

So I called VW Assistance. This was at about 20:00. They called back saying they wouldn't be able to get anyone to me until AFTER 22:00!!
I didn't like the sound of that so called the AA with whom I'm still a member (thank god I didn't cancel it!). They got out to me within 30 minutes.

I opened the bonnet and all of a sudden all the lights came back on!

He asked "Are they supposed to come on?"!

The guy then opened the flap covering the battery and said "Ah, there's the problem, they hadn't tightened one of the terminals on the battery".

I couldn't believe it.

But it I think it answers my resetting question... If the terminals had lost their connection, albeit briefly, would that reset the trip and MPG counters BUT NOT the clock? My experience with PCs is that a clock would normally have a battery backup. When the power came back after over an hour the clock had reset too.

This could have been quite dangerous if this had happened whilst driving!

The car is going in next Tuesday for them to have a look at my speaker problem but I'm going to give them a bit of an ear full this morning about this.

One thing I did also want to ask was about some of the status lights on the dashboard.

When power was restored I had three yellow lights stay on until I'd driven a short distance. They were:
1) a yellow steering wheel
2) a yellow tyre pressure light
3) a yellow ESP light

I'm hoping I've not done anything wrong in driving off with those lights being on but they have gone out now...!

I would suggest talking to your dealer to check if anything needs setting - actually, shouting at your dealer as they presumably caused the problem. As you say, it could have been a catastrophic situation.

Normally, the trip milages are held in volatile memory - they certainly are on a MK4 Golf. That means that if the power is disconnected you lose the mileages. So wouldn't be a surprise to see a loose battery connection make this happen.
As for the clock - these would normally have a backup battery on a PC, though can't see that being the case on a car as would need to be replaced periodically (certainly never seen one on a car). Some of the newer vehicles have the ability to get the updated time via the radio RDS signal - this could then be used to automatically update the clock, since everything is conencted via CAN bus.

Glad to read you have got it fixed, hope all goes well when you embarrass your dealer for poor presale prep, mention a complaint letter to VW, you never know what he may offer to talk you out of writing it.

I had a dead battery today due to leaving headlights on last night (always have switch in "auto" but it had been bumped to "on" so having lights still on when I shut the garage door did not seem abnormal.)

After jump start around 4:30PM today the clock said 9:26 (AM? or PM?) which I suppose was time when battery died. Radio preset memories were ok. Initially front window one-touch full up/full down wasn't working but in few minutes was ok. ESP warning was lit in tachometer display but went out shortly and that anomaly is mentioned in Owner's Booklet 3.2, page 56 "tips".

I used VW road service even tho I still have AAA because if anything went wrong I wanted it to be VW's responsibility. He (an independent contractor to VW) arrived in 45 minutes but wasn't familiar with EOS and was dismayed when I told him the two batteries (V6) were in the trunk which couldn't be opened without power.

But then I told him there are + and - terminals under the hood, and I opened the cap over the + terminal for him (Booklet 3.2, page 100). He got EOS started but didn't give me a battery health analysis as AAA would have done. So I drove over to my dealer, fortunately only 3 miles away, and their service people did a quick check of my battery health (12.1V idle, 13.2V charging) and declared me OK for the road, no special charging needed.

In sum, good job well done by VW.

I am having the same problem with mine, been back to the dealership today and they have said they can't find any fault with the trip computer. How would I go about tightening the connections to resolve this?

Regards
Mike
