We had a puncture and on checking the manual does not include tyre sizes or ratings.

Checked with VW and they eventually came up with "235/45R17 94V" as the specified tyre size and rating for a 2.0FSI in the UK.

Strange that ours is on "235/45R17 97W Extra Load" Bridgestone RE050As when these are also produced as 94Ws.

Hi Ian,
Just popped out to check what's on mine and it's got Dunlop Sport SP01 235/40R18 95Y Extra Load on.

Looked at the price of a new one and their £160 a corner - ouch!! Hope they last well.

Did you manage to get a replacement in the end?

Yes, left the wheel with National in Cannock Sunday afternoon and collected it with new tyre Monday evening.

At least they are easier than the Michelins on the first A2!

Willbe looking at something cheaper when it comes to changing pairs.

Beware of Bridgestone

only got 9,000 miles out of my front tyres on local short journey driving - am on Brigstone protenz 234/45 r17 at 104 each! and utter rubbish - no traction in the wet. Would recommend going back to firestone for better grip and handling but v £££££:

Agree about the Bridgestones.......................never been so embarrassed at the TL Grand Prix in the wet !

Not sure about Firestones, anyone got any views !

I've had to have 2 Bridgestones replaced but my local tyre dealer said only 1 other manufacturer made identical suitable tyres and that was Goodyear... So I got the Bridgestones again but they're not the grippiest tyres I've ever had.

According to several tyre forums and Honest John, the tyre to have is the Goodyear Hydragrip. They are expensive and you need to change all 4 !

If our friend is only getting 9,000 on the Bridgestones then maybe a change to the Goodyear would be worth it, although it is usual for grippy tyres to have a shorter life!

A belated response. Dunlop have a good site that allows you to put your car details in and get the appropriate tyre details. Also gives pressures etc. see http://www.dunloptyres.co.uk/ourTyres/car/.

Useful if you have the standard fitment but we have 17" instead of the standard 16".

Also fitting the same as VW fitted would mean we were over-specifying again!

Tyre usage

Just a point of info that some of you may like. I have managed to get some Michlin tyres at Costco for £124 each. I have just used my first sent and have averaged around 20,000 miles on them. I asked about their cost at Kwikfit and if you are willing to haggle you can get them down to about the same cost.

mine were Dunlop Sport 215/55 R16

well i have done 24,000 on the tyres i had from when the car was new and looking for some new ones now as i am told there is only about another 2000 on one tyre at the moment having a look at blackcircle and the replacement Continentals are £120 each.. ouch but i only need to replace the front 2 tyres at the mo I have had a warning light come up on the dash (exaust fume warning) so will see what VW can do.

Update OMG £184 for continentals and £178 for the same dunlops
