I hadn't really paid much attention to the new rates. That's one hell of a price hike for the 2.0T.

My car was registered late Oct 06 and is also 202g/km. Surely if my car was registered 1 week later it wouldn't have made any difference?!?!

The figures on the VW website show 194g/kg.
Early models are 202 but sometime towards the end of 2006 the figure got revised to 194.
I wonder why that happened. :)

Check out the real figure for your car on the DVLA site by putting in your registration number

The figure is mentioned on your V5 Registration Certificate so once it's there you're lumbered with it, even if newer versions of exactly the same engine show a lower output. It won't make a difference on the Road Tax though as Band F is for 186 - 225 g/km so both the 202 and the 194 figures fit into the same band.

VW probably did some tinkering with settings to get the CO2 output down on the newer engines. Or are all the figures just dreamt up in an office somewhere anyway?!

True for this year but it makes a big difference on the new bands which come out next year. I would imagine you can have the earlier engine brought up to the same standard as the newer ones then argue the case with the DVLA. Best talk to VW cust services first, always found them very helpful.

Might just be an ECU tweak. However, I fear you'll get short shrift from the DVLA as it isn't based on the actual CO2 emissions of your car. Actually looking at the April Which? report on "green" cars, when tested, many are actually 20-28% higher than that declared.

Absolutely right. I know it's an annoyance, but it's only £30/annum different. Less than 10 pence a day. The effort that's likely to be required to get it changed (with very little chance of success) is hardly likely to compensate anybody for their time and effort.

Yes that Which report is quite fascinating. How can they get such a vast difference, kind of shows what a farce the manufacturers figures really are. David
