Anyone else here noticed a problem with the finish on Westwood wheels round the rim?
It looks like bubbles of cream/white corrosion. I can categorically say that none of my wheels have never been curbed. Had a look at an 06 plate Eos on a forecourt and saw much more corrosion than I have at present could be a future problem for people. Looks like Westwood wheel rot or athletes wheel.

Is this just VW wheels in general or specific to Westwoods?

Hmm. I'll have to keep an eye on this. My Honda Accord has 17" Epsilon Alloys. I took it in to the Honda dealer for a service when it was two years old, and one of the technicians noticed a spot of corrosion around the centre cap of one of the wheels. All four wheels were replaced under warranty straight away, no questions asked.

There only downfall was they didn't tell me they were doing it. So a couple of days after the service I got an answering machine message from the dealer telling me my wheels were ready and please could I book the car in. There then followed a rather confusing phonecall to the service department in which I insisted they had made a mistake, and they insisted they hadn't!

I hope if a problem does become apparent, VW are as obliging.................

Oh dear ! I think VW advise cleaning allow wheels regularly and cleaning off brake dust etc. Thanks for the heads up.

Bob,
Brake dust! Its only ever on there at most a week, don't think that's part of the problem. What it may be is a minor break in the laquer (or whatever the finish is) round the rim when the tyres were fitted. Pretty sure that if you look you will see evidence of the same problem.

Had the wheels on my Mazda 6 replaced under warranty. Could be due to salt corrosion on a laquer not sufficient for UK roads.

Athletes wheels

Just thought I would let you see the effect and they are increasing in size. Now all wheels are affected. The surface of the laquer is not damaged its still absolutely smooth

Daren,
Not sure that is the problem you will see from the pic and there is no break in the surface paint its all happening underneath, surface is as smooth as a babys bottom. At first I thought it was bird poo.

Yes, I have a couple of small areas where it's gone a bit milky under the lacquer.

Neh321,
I've been watching mine and they are growing so keep an eye out.

Its only minor at the moment but has anyone taken this up as a warranty issue or do they just say wear and tear?

It's a good point.
I will point it out to my dealer next time I'm there and see what they say about it. It might be a 'known problem' and they might surprise us and do something about it!

Not so, this problem affects all wheels and there is no surface damage this is under the top coat of laquer.

Corrosion just starting on the outer beading of both rear Westwoods and the dealer ordered 2 new wheels on warranty without any hesitation, so I guess it must now be a problem recognised by VW. Lets hope they have cured the problem as I don't want the same problem eventually with the new wheels after the warranty has expired.

Just to let you know, I am having mine changed hopefully tomorrow (dealer ordered them today) under the warranty - no questions asked.

You've just hit a sidewalk somewhere;)
Not sure it's a sidewalk. Have seen one EOS that had hit the sidewalk and it's deeper than surface, with regular stripes, dark on grey. Here it's clearly showing as bubbles/foam building up from inside to outside, on top of the rims...

Have you tried wiping it to see if it came from in between rim and tyre or if truly is a piece of the rim that was chemicaly affected?

Difficult to tell as you would have to remove the tyre to really see the cause. But the main issue is no matter the circumstances since you need tyres on the wheels it should not be happening. At first I tried to polish it off as I thought it was bird sh*t but no joy as you can tell. I think I will make a warranty claim as others have done.

cheers

It's not kerbing damage. I have some of that too (doh!) but the milky corrosion is beneath the lacquer finish and no amount of rubbing it makes any difference.

I haven't tackled my dealer on it yet but intend to do so.

Neh, Lets know how you get on. But first of all is your problem the same as mine (see earlier pic) or is yours more extensive. Just so that when I take it up with my dealer we will be of similar circumstances and hope fully get a good result.

It's exactly the same problem as yours - i.e. on the actual wheel rim rather than the spokes, which seem to be OK. Only mine is quite a bit more extensive than yours and covers maybe an eighth of the whole rim.
