17" tyre ratings

Time to replace my front tyres at 15,000. Currently have Pirelli Pzero Rosso, (who thinks up these names!) they are 235/45/17 rating of 97W.
Looking at tyres with a rating of 97 quite a lot seem to be classed as extra load tyres (XL), any one noticed this before?

Probably go for Michelin's primacys
Cheers, David

Hi All,
I have Pirelli PZero Rossos (235/45/17) with a load rating of 97W (where the 97 is the load rating and W the speed rating.)
97 is a very high load rating does everyone else have 97W on their tyres?
Cheers, Dave

Bridgestone Potenza 235/45R17 97W.

If you're interested, 97 is the load rating (730kg) and W is the speed rating (270km/h).

Michelin Pilot HXMXM4 235/45R17 97H. These were standard fit for early US models.

Exactly - this is why the space-saver spare has [at least they do here] caution signs on the wheel rim advising speed MUST not exceed 80Km/hr and should only be used to drive to the nearest tyre repairer and certainly not for several days until you get arouind to doing something about repair/replacement. The bright colour of the spare is intended to force the driver to act earlier than later  .

The following article details the limitations of space saver tyres and the significant reductions in road-holding and braking associated with their use:

http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2004/04/27/1082831569221.html

The only time I have used a space-saver was on a Honda Prelude some years ago when I replaced a punctured front off-side wheel some 100Km from the nearest town; I found the changed driving characteristics of the car very disconcerting and dangerous at speeds above 60Km/hr. The best solution would have been to put the space saver on a rear wheel and put the full size rear wheel on the front however with only one jack and no car stands this was not possible.

Thanks. Haven't quite wound it up to 186 mph yet!!
Let us know when you hit this figure. Gotta pay for those tires somehow!

I got the same tyre size but the car came with Bridgestone RE50A which are really one of the best tires on the market but next change I will put Yokohama ADVAN Sport so I recommend any of these two.
I didnt change till 17,000 miles in the end and replaced the front with two more PZeros :)

I did have Continental Sport Contact 2 235/45/17 97W but they weren't going to last much past 25,000 k's which was a surprise. I haven't been able to find much test data on tyres and for better or worse I have replaced my tyres with Yokohama C-Drive. So far no complaints.

Given that all Eos' come from the one plant in Portugal, I am amazed that they fit so many different brands of tyres - particularly in the one size.

So far we have Continental (which I have), Pirelli, Michellin and Bridgestone.

Does anyone have any other brand in 235/45 17?

I know that Australian car makers will commonly dual source tyres, so that if one manufacturer has a problem, that they can swing over to the other, but four (or more) suppliers?

Goodyears came standard here in the USA on my 2008 2.0T Lux. I've always liked Pirelli P6 and Bridgestone Potenzas, however. I've only got 5500 miles on my Eos so hopefully a long way from needing new tires.
