Hi All,

I have recently bought an EOS and got the dreaded ‘convertible top to workshop message’. Diagnostics came back as an open circuit on the hydraulic roof unit. Very grateful to VoxMag for his great posts on removing the case:

Opening mine up this morning, its a 2011 car, but the motor wasn’t in a case, rather it was wrapped in some (absorbent) foam and secured with a clip - interesting thing is the clip and form where both stamped genuine VW?! I think it might have been a VW repair under the original warranty. So I’m going to dry it out and build a new support mechanism, the foam was damp (and had been for a long time) but everything else dry - fingers crossed it still works and lasts a while longer.

The dealer I have bought it from has offered to purchase a new pump, as there is a 1k warranty on the car. The VW part is 1400+VAT, so I wondered if anyone knows where I can buy a cheaper reputable aftermarket unit? The local VW specialist recommend Valeo as a brand, but I can’t find anything online for them? If I leave the dealer to their own devices, I’m pretty sure he will just pick up some rubbish off ebay, so any tips on where to buy appreciated. The part number is:1Q0.871.789.E NL. Very new to the world of Car DIY so apologies for newbie questions.

I hope you understood the post which is to remove and trash the VW OE foam box? But first you have to find the source of any water leak into the trunk.

Search U.K internet because there are people selling reconditioned EOS pumps. Roofmotors.co.uk sell them for £400 but I have seen cheaper used ex vehicle on Fleabay for around £200 with guarantee. Those will be a 1 way sale. Some reconditioners want you to return your old pump. Fortunately I did the mods to my pump before much water had got to it and I never had to get a replacement.

Hi Voxmagna, yep fully understood. My motor wasn’t encased in a foam box, it was strapped and resting on what looks like VW branded foam. The foam is date 2013 and its a 2011 car. I’ve put some photos here:

There is not much evidence of water getting into the boot but I will monitor. I’m thinking water might have got in when a previous owner retracted the roof after a rain shower or something like that. Thanks for the Roof Motors link, as you suggest they want old pumps returned. My preference would be to buy a brand new one made by someone other than VW but it doesn’t look like that is possible. It can be a lot worse if you have their fully enclosed foam box. :( I Doubt if you will find an aftermarket manufacturer - not enough demand to tool up). They will either be recon'd or just lifted from a scrap EOS. Fortunately for us at the mo. there seems to be quite a few used EOS parts about as owners not enthusiasts find their EOS too expensive to repair (at the Stealers)

I would have no issues considering one taken from a scrap car as long as I could see zero water damage on the plating or evidence of it being cleaned off. These pumps are well built and hardly get any use. It's just where V.W put them to get wet and their open cell foam box that's wrong.

I know you have a diagnostics fault report to work with but don't rule out the roof controller or a plug wiring issue because I suspect a bad mosfet driver inside could show the same fault. Basically, that fault is saying there is no current draw from the pump. Before spending the money I would do some checks first with a multimeter ohmeter. With the pump removed and most fluid emptied, you can briefly apply 12v from a spare battery in either polarity. If the pump runs both directions, then check the resistance of each of the 3 solenoid coils which should be the same. There are no complex electronics inside. Looking at your photos, although the pump casing shows the dreaded signs, they didn't look as bad as some others have posted.

As Voxmagna suggests I would contact www.roofmotors.co.uk I purchased an exchange electric motor from them over a year ago which has worked faultlessly. They were very helpful when I spoke to them on the phone. If it is just the electric motor that is faulty, as it was in my case, fitting the replacement proved quite straight forward. Resolving water ingress not quite so simple!
