With my poor history of loosing car keys and locking them inside the car, has anyone got any good tips or ideas? In the good old days, 10 minutes, a wire coat hanger and a length of electrical cable was all that I needed to get off and away but things are very different now. Are there any sources for a key without a transponder to hide underneath the car, just to get into the car but that won’t start the engine? One could then hide the original spare key inside the car. I understand it’s impossible even for a VW dealer to unlock a car when the original key’s lost.

i dont know if that is a viable option nowadays. although you may be able to get someone to cut one out of a different kind of key although i think they may have it now to where it can only accept the keys with a transponder unit built in to the key. so, my advice if its worth anything on here, is keep your keys on a key ring and in your pockets or on a hook where you freqeuently traffic.

I carry my valet key in my wallet for an emergency. The valet key doesn't have all the buttons so the width doesn't make that much difference to my wallet.

Didn't get a valet key ... I'll chase up the dealer. Thanks for the tip.

The snap below shows the valet key next to the Fob key. While it isn't the thinnest key in the world, it fits in my wallet without too much trouble. Note the "wrench" symbol on the key.

On another note, there is a guy on eBay that sells blank fob keys. In order to make them work, you have to jump through a few hoops. If anyone has done this procedure, I would be interested in how hard it is.
