I need help in making up my mind about purchasing an EOS. There is a 2008 LUX with 12,000 miles on it at my local dealer for $27,300. It is one of the colors I like, with the options I would want. It is a certified VW vehicle so I could qualify for special 4.99% financing. The other choice would be to try to find a new 2009 Komfort, try to deal the car down to around $29,000, receive the 0% financing and my monthly payment would also be manageable. Which would you choose?

O% financing is nice, but I personally would miss some of the features of the 2008 Lux if instead I had a Komfort. In particular I like the park distance sensors on the 2008 Lux and the security of knowing the top won't go down if something is in the way of the trunk lid opening. I was very happy in 2008 when this became standard on the Lux. Now for 2009 it seems that in order to get PDC you have to buy the technology package that also has the xenon headlamps (not a bad think to have xenons.....but the only way to get PDC). I also really like the power folding mirrors on the Lux and personally prefer the rounded shape of the 2008 mirros to the wedge-shaped 2009.

New is better than used

If you finance 27,000 at 4.99% for 60 months, you'll pay about $3500 in interest, for a total of $30,500.

If you buy a new one at 0% for 60 months, you'll obviously pay just the cost of the car. Local dalers around here (Boston) are advertising Komforts for $29,900-- and that's before any haggling.

Personally, with a car as mechanically complicated as the Eos, I'd go with the new one. Like most new models, the reliability data in Consumer Reports seems to indicate that reliability goes up after a car has been in production for a few years.

A 2009 will come with the 3 years of scheduled maintenance, and a 3 year warranty. What does the used one come with? How does that compare?

I recently purchased a "pre-loved" '08 Eos Komfort with just over 4,000 miles on it, from a NJ-based VW dealer for about $26,200 (not much of a concession on their part: their asking price was about $27,000). Warranty is 5 years/72,000 miles.

Not long after that, VW started offering 0% on new vehicles, but this dealer claims that for the '09, 0% is only good for a 36 month term.

Not to cry...my down payment and monthly nut is about where I want it.

I was in the same situation as you are. I went with the 2008. You will get way more options AND a longer warranty since it is certified. You should be covered for 5 years under the certified plan and a new one would only cover you for 3 years.

You're right-- it looks like the current 0% program (runs through 31 Aug) is only 36 months for the Eos. The GTI, Passat, adn Routan still have the 60 month offer, though. (Looks like the 60 month offer for Eos expired at the end of May.)

That may well swing the balance in favor of the '08 in the OP's original scenario...
