My EOS TDI with DSG has now done about 7000 km's. I have recently started to notice a whining sound when I accelerate, especially when I apply a reasonable amount of pressure to the accelerator when taking off. I don't profess to be a mechanical expert, but it sounds like something is slipping in the DSG.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? The car is due for its first service soon, so I plan to take it in to get it checked out. I was just curious if this is a fairly common issue, and if it is solvable.

Mine wasn't mechanical... I just left the kids at home and it hasn't happened since ;)

On a serious note, if the DSG clutches were slipping, you wouldnt get a whine, it would be sluggish and also very smelly!! (like when a manual clutch is worn beyond the realms of proper operation)

Thanks Simon. Even with my kids locked securely in the house, I clearly hear the sound when leaving home :(

Now that you mention it, I have had the clutch slipping on a couple of occassions. I can tell because the car sounds and feels different when it changes gears, and my garage gets that horrible smell you describe when I get home.

I suspect something is wrong with the DSG (or something related to transferring the power from the engine to the wheels :) ), since this is when the whining sound occurs.

Then you should take it in without futher ado... It should be adjusted before the plates are damaged too much... I guess as it is clearly a fault, they should replace them under warranty anyway, as it is clearly mal adjusted...

Please post back when you have taken it in so we can see the real cause after they investigate.

I understand the DSG uses "wet pack" clutch assemblies and I suspect the whine may not coming from the clutch packs but could be coming from a misaligned gear train or premature failure of the bearings. The aluminium transmission housing is a very good sound emitter so any internal noises are readily heard.

If the clutch packs are the problem, this should be evident if you drop some fluid from the transmission dipstick onto a white tissue. The fluid should be a uniform clear colour with a normal smell. If it is discoloured, has fine particles evident and/or smells burnt, the clutch pack is part or all of the problem. If the oil is OK then I suspect faulty assembly [excessive backlash] or a dud bearing.

Awaiting the outcome with a great deal of interest.

I'll check the transmission dipstick tonight and see what it looks like.

I took the car in to the dealership this morning to get them to check it out. The service guy came for a drive with me, and pretty much said straight away it is related to the turbo engaging. He believes there is a seal that is faulty somewhere along the intake to the turbo and this is what is causing the noise.

He has told me it is harmless and when the car goes in for a service they'll check it out properly and fix it.

Probably the best way I can describe it is that it is a high pitched squeeling noise. It happens as the car is accelerating, in particular when accelerating from very low speed or stand still.

Hi I have this problem too. It sounds like a very high pitched squeal mostly at take off but can occur on gear changes too. Just lasts 1-2 seconds. The VW service guys have a query into VW tech support, but at this stage don't know what it is. They suspect the turbo. Anyone have a similar issue? Thanks.

Hi Bones66,

Unfortunately I still suffer with the problem. The place I service the car at has never been able to fix it. To be honest, I seriously wonder if they have ever really tried.

Other than this annoyance, I love my VW EOS. Unfortunately because of this problem, I will probably never buy another one. Not because of the car, it is excellent other than this fault, but because of the poor service I have received in an attempt to fix it.

If I accelerate gently I am able to avoid hearing the problem, but that takes all the fun out of the car.

If you do get the problem resolved I would love to hear what they did to fix it. It sounds like you are getting further than I have been able to get with my local dealership.

I have a Carbonio air intake fitted to allow the turbo to ' breathe' better and for more performance with the ECU chip upgrade. Didnt have the squeal before fitting but I do now. this is normal as the standard intake restricts flow AND noise. Do you have a standard air intake? if so, maybe thats leaking allowing the standard noise of the turbo whine thru

Thanks for the response Cappers. I've got the 2008 standard TDI with standard intake. Yep I suspect you are right. Is this something that is easily fixed?

out of my league - i would think so because it is almost all plastic. My old one is only 4 weeks old and is available if it fits that model

I'm still trying! Put a call into the dealer this morning to follow up and the mechanics are going to check if VW tech support have responded to their query. The head mechanic thinks it's turbo related and mentioned something about known resonance issue. Not all EOS's do it, so it must be some kind of fault. I've done 92000 and had the noise for 70-80000 k's so it's not life threatening for the car, but I'm just about to come out of warranty and trade/sell so I want it fixed...:-(. Will keep you posted... Thanks for the responses., Bones.

PS - Mine's completely standard

I also have a Golf + which is TDI and It makes a kind of whistle noise when accelerating. Is that what you guys are talking about?? YOu really have to listen to notice it, but it is there sometimes.

Assuming it is what you are talking about, my G+ also does it...

turbo whine

I had exactly the same sort of noise from my 55 20 TDI dsg Golf sounds almost like a distant police car and I am afraid that the turbo gave up at 35,000 miles (the variable turbo vanes stuck (was told that the Mrs stop start local driving was to blame)).

My noise is loud enough to hear standing 10 metres or more from the car as it accelerates away. In the car it is also very clearly heard - but doesn't do it all the time. It is sort of like a loud whistle or screech (5 secs?). Reminds me of a slipping fan belt a little...

The dealer mechanic tried to listen with the bonnet up in their yard and thinks it is coming from the area of the Turbo/exhaust recirculation unit, and one other part (ie between the engine and the firewall). He had another look under the bonnet and is asking VW more questions...so no answer yet - if they can't narrow it down, I think I'll try to get them to replace something.

He said they have had trouble with gaskets on the exhaust recirulation set up before but it was a different noise...

I'll be calling again in a few days....

Getti close!!! Hopefully

Getting close guys! My car was into the shop today to have the turbo replaced as an attempt to solve the noise issue. The dealer just called and said it's not the turbo but one or more metal shims where the turbo bolts on. I haven't got all the details yet but will post once I pick it up tomorrow ...hopefully all fixed!

Success!!!

Just picked up the EOS from the dealer and the noise seems to have gone. The details on the service report are: "Leaking manifold gasket & manifold surface effected. Investigated & found noise to be coming from turbo area. Diss ticket obtained & was instructed to replace turbo. Removed & replaced turbo & all related gaskets".

Sooo - it was a leaking manifold gasket but VW instructed the dealer to replace the turbo anyway as they had ordered it.

Warranty finishes in 5 days and I've travelled 96000 - first complained about the noise at 15000 - Thank you VW!!

Parts (may be Australian numbering):
VW03G253010 EXMANTURBO
VW03G253039E GASKET
VWN90894601 NUT
VW03G131550 WASHER
VW069131547D GASKET
VW03G253039F GASKET
VW03L145757M GASKET
VW1K0253115T GASKET

Hope this helps anyone with high pitched squeal when they accelerate. :)

Whining Noise from turbo grille

Appreciate this thread goes back some way so hoping for some answers. I have the whine too on a 6 month old EOS TSI. It occurs only between 2000-2500rpm and the local VW mechanic has confirmed it as a known fault on the GTi engines. Apparently, the rod connecting to a turbo grille is vibrating when going up through the gears. I am advised VW in Germany has not yet found a cure despite replacing turbos, weighing down rods etc.
Has anyone else got this issue and been offered a fix by VW. I'm concerned this will be long grassed and I'll have to live with a whine that once you've heard it you always hear it.
